We’re thrilled to introduce the moderator of LitArts RI’s upcoming Writer as Witness: Cultivating Community Journalism panel, Phil Eli!

Phil is a freelance journalist based in Providence, his hometown. His debut book, Prescription for Pain: How A Once Promising Doctor Became the “Pill Mill Killer, was released in April 2024, from Steerforth Press. He was the news editor and staff writer at the alt-weekly, the Providence Phoenix, until the paper closed in 2014. Since then, he's contributed to VICE, the Atlantic, Men’s Health, The Nation, Boston Magazine, and Huffington Post, among other outlets. He has taught writing and journalism courses at RISD, UMass-Dartmouth, Brown University, and Columbia University’s graduate writing program. He serves on the board of the nonprofit news organization, the Providence Eye, and also edits the site’s opinion section. He is a proud member of LitArts RI.

Join Phil and other local journalists for advice on getting started in the field, followed by an opportunity to network with editors from local media outlets, on Sat, Oct 24 from 1-3pm at LitArts RI.

The LitArts RI Center will be closed this Sat, Oct 10 in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend. We will reopen Tuesday, October 13 at noon.

We’re excited to share details about the first workshop of LitArts RI’s Nov 14 Writers’ Block Party: From Stage to Page: Crafting Theatrical Moment with teaching artist H. Avery runs during the morning session from 10-11:30am.

In this hands-on workshop, writers will explore how using touch and other senses can help you navigate writers’ block, activate scenes and boost the theatrical quality of your work. Explore what theatricality is and what it can offer your story, applying skills commonly used for the stage onto the page. The workshop will be taught through the lens of playwriting, but will teach skills that can be applied to any form.
