Staff pick from Vern for A Death Doula's Guide to a Meaningful End by Jane K. Callahan

"Jane K. Callahan asks the questions: Why not prepare for the inevitable now so that we don't have to stress when we or our loved ones are facing the end of life? What is a good death? How can we become more comfortable with death and grief? Isn't learning all this cool? Part-memoir, part-history, part-guide, A Death Doula's Guide to a Meaningful End is a tender exploration of dying, death, grief, and the death industry as a whole. It covers everything, from seeing a dead body for the first time to knowing when to say when and how to advocate for a better death. I needed this book a few years ago, when I was helpless, confused, and coming to terms with the death of a loved one. But from reading this book, I already feel more prepared for the future and hope I can help pass this knowledge on to other folks."

Staff pick from Maggie for THE SECRET LIFE OF HIDDEN PLACES by Stefan Bachmann & April Genevieve Tucholke

"This book was everything I wanted it to be. Secret rooms, initiation wells, and hidden crystalized bones deep in catacombs are just the beginning of the delights you’ll discover inside. Each section is just long enough to satiate my curiosity before moving on to the next fascinating thing. More interesting, somehow, are the brief biographies of the people who had something to hide. Fall down a rabbit hole you never knew was there. If nothing else, grab this book for a bunch of “hidden” gems to add to your travel bucket list."

ABOUT THE BOOK & AUTHOR

Return to the beloved Christmas story of Dasher—now with exclusive additions featuring art from the Disney Jr. and Disney+ animated special!

Dasher is an adventurous young reindeer with a wish in her heart. She spends her days with her family under the hot sun in a traveling circus, but she longs for a different life—one where there is snow beneath her hooves and the North Star above her head. One day, when the opportunity arises, Dasher seizes her destiny and takes off in pursuit of the life she wants to live. It’s not long before she meets a nice man in a red suit with a horse-drawn sleigh—a man named Santa. And soon, with the help of a powerful Christmas wish, nothing will be the same.

MATT TAVARES is the author-illustrator of the New York Times best-selling picture book Dasher and its sequels, Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas and Dasher and the Polar Bear, as well as Red and Lulu, the graphic novel Hoops, and several sports biographies, including Becoming Babe Ruth and Growing Up Pedro. He is also the illustrator of Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld, The Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore, and Over the River and Through the Wood by L. Maria Child, among many other picture books. Matt Tavares lives in Ogunquit, Maine.

Staff pick from Sarrah for BRIMSTONE by Callie Hart

"Where do I begin? Callie Hart does an incredible job of spiking my anxiety and keeping me on the edge of my seat. I literally had to stop myself from reading ahead. This sequel to Quicksilver did not disappoint! It's action-packed and full of every type of character you would want to read about. Saeris and Kingfisher's story is one that I highly recommend to anyone looking for romance, fantasy, and lots of plot twists! This message is for Callie Hart: Please get that third one going because I NEED to know what happens."
