Curious on how a rural internship experience can turn into data-driven insights? This past summer, Ty Easter, a student in the Chancellor's Leadership Development Program, had the opportunity to do just that! 📊
Through the SECU Public Fellows Internship Program, Easter spent the summer as an environmental educator at Hanging Rock State Park, where he was able to apply his academic interests in a real-world conservation setting. “The most valuable part of my internship was having the opportunity to find myself,” Easter said.

Our Shelton Scholars recently enjoyed a weekend packed full of excitement, service, and learning at their Fall Retreat!
This retreat, planned by Chloe Hammonds and the Selfless Service Committee, aimed to strengthen relationships among our Scholars while they made a positive impact on local communities through service. Scholars volunteered at Family STEM Day with the Lumbee Tribe, learned more about the Lumbee culture and history, and shared team bonding over games and seminars.
Thank you to the Lumbee Tribe for welcoming us!
Scholars, what is something new you learned or a skill you developed from the experience? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

At the heart of the Global Leadership Minor is a vibrant network of unique partnerships. 🌎️
Today, we’re featuring one of the GLM’s partner organizations in France, the Université Côte d'Azur (UniCA)
While in Nice, France, GLM students participate in the IS 495: Advanced Special Topics in International Studies course, which centers on sustainable global citizenship and leadership. They have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with students from UniCA, where they attend site visits and interactive class sessions that demonstrate how different disciplines in global settings address sustainability.
A huge thank you to the Université Côte d'Azur for their continued warmth and support for our students!

Congratulations to Dr. Jason Bocarro, Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor of Leadership with a Global Perspective, on his recent induction into the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration!
Bocarro, a faculty member in the NC State College of Natural Resources, is also a faculty member in the Global Leadership and Team Decision-Making Minor (GLM). Each Spring semester, he travels abroad with GLM students to Scotland, where he facilitates learning experiences designed to teach students about the issues and opportunities facing global leaders in the tourism, sport and recreation industries.
Please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved honor!
Congratulations to our own Dr. Jason Bocarro, who was recently inducted into the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration! 👏
Bocarro, the Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor of Leadership with a Global Perspective, joined the college faculty in January 2006 and currently serves as the program director of the James Buzzard Leadership Development Program. He was also recently selected as a 2026-27 Office for Faculty Excellence Faculty Fellow.
Bocarro has received several awards for his excellence in teaching, including the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, NC State Provost Faculty Fellow, The Academy of Leisure Sciences Fellow, NC State Faculty Scholar and more.
“Being inducted into the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration is really meaningful because having worked in the field in three countries (Canada, England and the U.S.), I have seen firsthand the profound impact the profession can have on people, communities, and quality of life across different cultures,” Bocarro said.
“I am deeply honored that my work has been recognized by respected colleagues within the profession and privileged to join an Academy filled with exceptional leaders from across the country. I'm excited to get to know some of these leaders better and hope that will benefit our department and students at NC State.”

Twenty-five years later, we remember and honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, along with the first responders who bravely answered the call. We will never forget.
On that day, our Center's founder and NC State University alum General H. Hugh Shelton '63 was serving as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In his biography, "Without Hesitation," he recalls the moment he learned of the attacks while en route to a NATO meeting in Europe. He instructed the pilot of the aircraft he was traveling on to return stateside. When he landed, he began the coordination of the U.S. military response.
"We flew directly over what had been the Twin Towers, just a few minutes after they collapsed. Smoke was billowing up to about the ten- of fifteen-thousand-foot level–and even from our altitude you could tell there was a terrible mess down at the base."
Today, our hearts are with the families and community members of all impacted by the events of this day.
