Places in Peril: Former Hellenic Orthodox Church - Preservation Raleigh 07/31/2026

🌟Good News for a Place in Peril: the former Hellenic Orthodox Church

You may recall our recent feature article on the former Hellenic Orthodox Church at 211 S. Person Street, adjacent to Moore Square. Built in 1938 by a dedicated group of 25 families, this chapel represents a vital piece of downtown Raleigh’s cultural and architectural history. Identified as one of our 2026 Places in Peril, its future seems uncertain as surrounding blocks transition toward high-density development. Shortly after our article was published, we heard from members of Raleigh’s Greek community as well as the property owners, the Raleigh Rescue Mission.

Representatives from Preservation Raleigh, the local Greek community, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Raleigh Rescue Mission gathered recently to begin productive discussions on how to landmark and permanently protect this historic chapel.

We are encouraged by this collaborative step forward and will keep you updated as progress continues! Learn more about the chapel and it’s history here:

The Wright-McMillan House - Preservation Raleigh 07/23/2026

🏠Unprotected and on the market: Learn more about the Wright-McMillan house. It is one of our Preservation Raleigh places in peril. We’d love to see a buyer protect and restore this lovely historic space.

The sprawling stone house at 216 Hawthorne Road had been called the “crown jewel” of the neighborhood. In a community like Forest Park, which is renowned for its architectural quality, that is no small praise. Occupying nearly three-quarters of an acre, the 22-room, 6,300-square-foot estate is a commanding presence. The significance of the house is not only architectural, but also cultural.

The Wright-McMillan House - Preservation Raleigh The Wright-McMillan House, located at 216 Hawthorne Road in Forest Park is currently on the market for $3.2 million. While the price reflects the home’s size and prime location, it also places the property in a precarious position.

🚨 SECTION 106
Historic preservation protections are facing a major challenge—and Raleigh’s historic places need our voice.

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is one of our country's most vital tools for protecting historic sites and cultural landmarks from harmful federal projects. Right now, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) has proposed revisions that would significantly weaken these legal protections.

What does Section 106 mean for us locally, and why does this matter? Read the full update from the National Trust for Historic Preservation below, and sign up for the upcoming webinar to learn how you can help take action. 👇

Section 106 is Under Threat: What You Need to Know | National Trust for Historic Preservation Since the enactment of the National Historic Preservation Act 60 years ago, Section 106 has been the foundational requirement for federal agencies to “take into account” the effects of their actions on historic properties and places. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has proposed rev...
