The NC State University- Small Ruminant Educational Unit maintains sheep flocks and a goat herds for on-going teaching and research.

We currently manage a group of 225- 250 mature age animals. The ewe flocks lamb in the spring and fall of the year, while the doe herds kid during the early spring. NC State University is credited for the development of the first true Polled Dorset "NCSU 402", he was born Polled (Hornless),in 1954, due to a genetic mutation. In 1956, the Continental Dorset Club accepted the new breed and registered the first polled dorset. Within a few decades the majority of Dorsets being registered are polled. This breed is now one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Dr. Lemuel Goode and Sam Buchanan, are credited for developing the Polled Dorset
