Starting this Friday, September 25th, pick up a passport at participating locations and collect Dracula stamps along the way. Complete your passport and you'll receive a backstage tour at Carolina Ballet and be entered into our grand prize raffle.

Behind the Ballet: The Pointe Shoes — Part III

A pointe shoe’s life is surprisingly short for professional dancers. After all the sewing, breaking in, gluing, and customizing, a dancer can wear through a pair in just a few days.

Soloist Uma Deming shared, “Every dancer has their own way of preparing their shoes, and what works for one dancer might not work for another. There’s almost always another pair waiting to be sewn, broken in, and ready to go.”

Behind the Ballet: The Pointe Shoes — Part II

Pointe shoes are something dancers continually adjust to the demands of their work, from daily rehearsals to the type of role in a performance.

Soloist Dancer Ling Minucci () says, “I tend to wear softer shoes during my performances, unless I’m doing a pas de deux. Then I like to wear slightly harder shoes for extra support.”

Ling wears Freed of London’s Ballet Bronze satin, a shade she loves because it matches her skin tone and helps complete her line onstage. Skin-tone pointe shoe shades were introduced by Freed in 2018, giving dancers an alternative to the traditional pink satin and the process of pancaking their shoes themselves.

For a ballet dancer, pointe shoes are more than part of the uniform. They are an essential tool that becomes uniquely personal over years of training, rehearsals, and performances.

Like many in the company, Principal Dancer Ayla O’Day (Ayla O'Day) wears pointe shoes by Freed of London (Freed of London USA). Each pair is handmade, allowing a pointe shoe maker to customize the shoe to the individual dancer’s needs. Each maker’s shoes have their own subtle differences, including a distinct symbol stamped on the bottom.

“When I joined the company, I started trying other dancers’ custom shoes to figure out what I would like,” Ayla says. “I’ve been wearing my maker and custom shoes for about five years now, and I hope my maker doesn’t retire before me.”
