Every month, thousands of people work behind the scenes to put books into little hands across North Carolina.

Local partners, state leaders, donors, volunteers, and supporters all play a role in helping children receive free books through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

Since 2017, Smart Start has worked alongside community partners to expand the program's reach to children in all 100 North Carolina counties.

Together, we've helped put more than 27 million books into the hands of North Carolina children.

From birth to age 5, children experience some of the most important years of growth and learning. That's why Dolly Parton's Imagination Library provides free, high-quality books each month from birth until a child's fifth birthday.

At Smart Start, we believe those early years matter. Through support for early care and education, literacy, family support, health, and child development, we're working alongside communities across North Carolina to help children thrive from birth to age 5.

On September 25, communities across the country will come together to celebrate Dolly's legacy by supporting local Dolly Parton's Imagination Library programs. Here in North Carolina, your support helps children receive a free, high-quality book every month from birth to age 5.

In FY 24-25, Smart Start Local Partnerships invested over $3.4 million in the health and well-being of young children and their families.

Smart Start funded programs and professionals that help families better understand their child’s development, build healthy habits and relationships, and navigate local resources with support.
