EnerSys ABSL™ lithium-ion space batteries are part of the power support system for NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope mission through collaboration with the European Space Agency.
Successfully launched on Aug. 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the Roman observatory is designed to help astronomers study dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets from a vantage point about 930,000 miles from Earth.
Through ESA’s contribution to the mission, ABSL™ space battery technology is helping provide reliable power support for an observatory built to expand scientific understanding of the universe.
The mission reflects the continued use of EnerSys battery technology in demanding space applications, where precision, reliability, and performance are essential.
Congratulations to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, ESA - European Space Agency, and all mission partners on this important achievement.

Lead batteries continue to demonstrate one of the strongest examples of resource efficiency in U.S. manufacturing.
Battery Council International’s new U.S. Recycling Rate Study reports that lead batteries are recycled at a rate of nearly 98%, making them America’s most recycled consumer product. The study also notes that the long-term recycling rate remains above 99%.
That performance reflects a closed-loop system built through decades of investment in collection, recycling, manufacturing and responsible material recovery. For EnerSys, this reinforces the importance of keeping critical battery materials in productive use, while supporting domestic manufacturing and strengthening supply chain resilience.

EnerSys has shared an update on its planned U.S. lithium cell manufacturing facility in Greenville, South Carolina, reflecting a defense-focused plant supported by a revised grant awarded by the Department of Energy.
