By now most have heard that AT&T will be sunsetting their copper based internet and phone services - What most don't know is that it has already begun.
Since October of 2025, AT&T has quit accepting new orders, moves or modifications for copper-based services.
In June of 2026, AT&T began permanently decommissioning copper lines in an initial 500 of their wire centers nationwide which impacted roughly 10% of their network footprint.
Between 2027 and 2029, the remaining copper footprint will be shut down so that only their fiber and wireless networks will be available.
Most companies may not even realize they are still using copper phone lines for their elevator and emergency call boxes, their fire and security alarm panels to connect to their monitoring companies and even some fax and credit card lines. There are even some still that are using copper phone lines on their old PBX phone systems.

Verizon is back!!
Verizon completed its $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications on January 20, 2026, creating a major, combined fiber network. Frontier now operates as "Frontier, a Verizon company". The deal significantly expands Verizon's fiber footprint, adding millions of fiber customers across 31 states and Washington, D.C..
Key Details of the Merger (as of Jan 2026):
What it means: Frontier's fiber network is integrating with Verizon's Fios and mobility services to expand coverage.
Customer Impact: For now, there are no immediate changes for existing Frontier customers, who do not need to take any action.
Future Plans: The acquisition enables "better value and more choices" in home internet and mobile services, with plans for improved fiber-optic offerings.
This move reverses the 2016 deal where Frontier bought Verizon's wireline operations in several states.
