In honor of Native American Day, let’s take a moment to recognize the remarkable working dogs that played an important role in the lives of many Indigenous peoples across North America. 🐕 Indigenous communities utilized dogs for far more than companionship—they helped transport supplies by pulling travois, assisted with hunting and tracking, alerted families to danger, protected camps, and provided warmth and materials through their coats and hides. In some cultures, dogs also held important social and ceremonial roles. These dogs were valued for their intelligence, endurance, instincts, and ability to work alongside people. Their history is a powerful reminder that the relationship between humans and dogs has always been built on communication, trust, purpose, and teamwork—principles that remain at the heart of good dog training today. 🐾

Misbehavior Monday!! -Marking Territory

To stop a dog from urine marking inside the house, you must break the habit, eliminate the scent, and address the underlying trigger (usually anxiety or territorial instincts).

1. Clean Past Spots with Enzymatic Cleaner
Dogs will return to the same spot if they can smell their previous marks. Standard household cleaners or bleach do not break down the proteins in urine.Use a specialized enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle or Rocco & Roxie to completely destroy the scent molecules.Clean the soiled areas thoroughly, extending a few inches past the visible spot.
2. Supervise and Restrict Freedom
Treat the dog as if they are being housetrained for the first time.Close bedroom doors or use baby gates to block access to common marking zones (like the corners of couches, curtains, or new furniture).Keep the dog in the same room as you. If you cannot watch them closely, place them in a crate or a designated safe zone.Consider using belly bands (male dog wraps) temporarily while indoors to prevent them from damaging property while you train.
3. Catch and Redirect
If you catch your dog in the act (sniffing intently, lifting a leg), make a sudden noise like a clap to interrupt them.Immediately take them outside to their designated bathroom area.Reward heavily with high-value treats and praise when they urinate outside. Never punish your dog after the fact; they will not connect the punishment with the marking behavior.
4. Neutralize Environmental Triggers
Marking is often triggered by changes in the environment or stress. New items: If your dog marks new items (like shopping bags, a visitor's coat, or new furniture), keep those items out of reach until the dog adapts to their presence.Spaying or Neutering: If the dog is intact, reproductive hormones strongly drive marking. Spaying or neutering often significantly reduces or completely eliminates the behavior if done early.Anxiety: If the marking stems from anxiety please contact your veterinarian for further advice and possible treatment solutions.

Do you find yourself trying so hard to stop your dog from doing XYZ, and well it's not working as well as you had hoped?

Behavior changes more quickly and reliably, while having lasting results, when you find ways to say "yes" more than you say "no". Balanced training and negative feedback have their place but this is not where we put it.

✅ Dog training is hugely successful when you find way to teach your dog alternate behaviors to replace the bad ones instead of trying over and over to stop or punish the bad behavior.

EXAMPLES

1️⃣ If you have a dog jumps on guests instead of punishing the dog for jumping a better solution is to train your dog to do a behavior instead of jumping. So, training Fido to lie on a mat when the doorbell rings and guests enter would eliminate his need or ability to jump on the entering guests.

2️⃣ If you have a dog that pulls on the leash instead of jerking the leash and trying to stop the pulling, give treats and rewards when Fluffy walks nicely next to you.

Train her that walking on a loose leash next to you yields treats, and then sniffs to the grass to follow then she'll look forward to walks and learn that walking on a loose leash brings on good things. She'll choose that behavior every time the more she's trained to understand this.

3️⃣ If you have a dog that barks out of the window instead of punishing him for barking, teach him to settle on a mat away from the window and/or that when he sees things outside good things happen and there is no need to bark frantically.
