Our team of filmmakers, editors and producers take pride Exploring America’s small towns—their history, hidden gems, unique shops, and natural wonders.
Enjoy the journey off the beaten path!
Grass Valley is one of those California towns where the Gold Rush never really disappeared. It just became part of everything around it.
More than 17 million ounces of gold were produced across the Grass Valley mining district, including 5.8 million ounces from the legendary Empire Mine, where 367 miles of tunnels still run beneath the Sierra Nevada foothills. And significant gold deposits are still believed to remain underground today. (SEC)
But Grass Valley is much more than its mining history.
Downtown is packed with locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, tasting rooms and historic buildings, anchored by the Holbrooke Hotel, which traces its story back to the Golden Gate Saloon built in 1852. The hotel has welcomed everyone from Mark Twain to U.S. presidents and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in California Gold Country. (Holbrooke Hotel)
Just a few minutes away, Nevada City makes it easy to experience two of Northern California’s best-preserved Gold Rush towns in one trip. Beyond downtown, the Sierra foothills open into hiking and biking trails, lakes, forests and the swimming holes and recreation of the Yuba River region. (Holbrooke Hotel)
And you don’t have to travel deep into the mountains to find it. Grass Valley sits roughly an hour northeast of Sacramento, making Nevada County an easy Northern California road trip and a natural weekend escape from Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. (Holbrooke Hotel)
Come for California Gold Rush history. Stay for historic downtown Grass Valley, local businesses, the Holbrooke Hotel, nearby Nevada City and some of the best outdoor recreation in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Burney Falls has been called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” but the waterfall is only the beginning of what makes this corner of Northern California worth the drive.
Make Redding or Mount Shasta your base camp and turn Burney Falls into a full day trip through the Cascade region. Start beneath the 129-foot waterfall at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, where underground springs help send roughly 100 million gallons of water over the falls every day.
Then keep exploring. Spend time along Lake Britton, hike through the volcanic landscape around Hat Creek and Subway Cave, follow Highway 89 through the forest, or build Burney into a bigger Northern California road trip connecting Mount Shasta, McCloud, Lassen and Redding.
This is the California people miss when they only think about the coast and big cities. Waterfalls, volcanoes, alpine lakes, lava tubes and mountain towns all packed into one part of the state.
Burney Falls might be the reason you come. The rest of the region is the reason you make a weekend of it.
Skykomish, Washington is one of the easiest mountain town escapes from Seattle Tucked along the Cascade Scenic Byway near Stevens Pass, this small town sits right on the Skykomish River with historic railroad roots, forested cabins, local food, and that quiet Cascade mountain feel you usually have to drive much farther to find.
The whole downtown is under a square mile, which is part of what makes it so good. You can walk through town in minutes, grab a meal, stop into a few local spots, and be back by the river before your coffee gets cold.
Stay PNW has cabins like South Fork Cabin tucked into the trees, close enough to hear the river at night. It is the kind of place you book for a weekend and leave wishing you had one more day.
You can drive right through Salida and never know what you're missing.
Salida's creative district is where the town's stories live.
It's a community of makers and artists whose work you can see, hear, and experience up close. Just outside town, Chaffee County's hot spring culture is part of everyday life here, a tradition worth slowing down for.
Walk the creative district. Meet the people behind the work. Then end the day in the hot springs.
It's warm, welcoming, and easy to miss.
This is Salida and Chaffee County, and it deserves more than a drive-through.
The Montague Hot Air Balloon Fair is happening this weekend, September 18–20, in Montague, California, and if you’re looking for something unforgettable to do in Northern California this weekend, this is worth the early wake-up call.
Saturday is the biggest day of the weekend, with tethered hot air balloon rides, a car show, downtown parade, local vendors, food, music, kids activities and the Night Glow at 7:30 PM. 🎈✨
📍 Montague Airport — Montague, CA
📅 September 18–20, 2026
🎟️ FREE admission
⏰ Gates open at 6 AM | Balloons launch around 7 AM
🌟 Saturday Night Glow — 7:30 PM
If you’re coming for the balloons, get there early. Balloon launches are weather-dependent, and there’s something pretty special about watching them inflate and lift off as the sun comes up over far Northern California.
Save this for the weekend and send it to someone who needs a spontaneous Northern California road trip. 🚗🎈
You can drive right through this canyon and still have no idea how much you’re missing.
The Plumas County stretch of the Feather River Canyon is more than a beautiful drive on Highway 70. Around Belden, the river squeezes between steep mountain walls, trains disappear into tunnels and cross towering bridges, and trails climb straight out of the canyon into the forest.
Stop in Belden. Walk a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Find a quiet spot along the Feather River. Watch the trains wind through the canyon. Explore the side roads, bridges and viewpoints — or just pull over, turn off the engine and listen to the river.
It’s rugged, a little remote, and nothing like the California most people picture.
This is the Feather River Canyon in Plumas County — and it deserves more than a drive-through.
Thankfully, Carmel-by-the-Sea’s famous ice cream restrictions are no longer something visitors have to worry about today. 🍦 Now you can wander the village with a sweet treat, browse local shops and galleries, and enjoy everything that makes Carmel feel so special.
Part of its charm comes from what it doesn’t have: loud amplified music and bright streetlights everywhere. The result is a quieter, more intimate atmosphere that feels especially romantic after dark—almost like stepping into a storybook by the sea.
Carmel’s creative roots run deep, too. Artists, writers and photographers helped shape the village into the beautiful, distinctive destination it is today.
🚨 Consider this your official excuse to SKIP WORK and head north. 🎈🌄

Colorado’s best season is almost here. 🍂🏔️
From now through mid-October, the Rockies start trading summer green for layers of gold, amber, orange, and deep red—and every mountain town feels like it belongs on a postcard.
Think golden aspens lining the roads around Aspen and Snowmass, fiery hillsides near Telluride, scenic drives through Kebler Pass and Independence Pass, crisp mornings in Crested Butte, and endless fall color tucked into Rocky Mountain National Park.
It’s the season for winding mountain roads, chilly sunrise hikes, cozy little towns, and pulling over every five minutes because the view somehow keeps getting better.
If you love fall colors and mountain scenery, Colorado is about to be very hard to beat. 🍁
