The University Libraries are delighted to celebrate Dr. Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe, recipient of the 2026 University Libraries Distinguished Alumnus Award.

For decades, Joxe has dedicated his work to preserving an important piece of Western and Basque history. As the leading scholar of Basque arborglyphs, he documented more than 20,000 tree carvings and built an extraordinary research collection that has deepened our understanding of this unique cultural legacy.

In 2024, Joxe entrusted that collection to the Jon Bilbao Basque Library, where it will continue to support research, teaching, and discovery for years to come.

We are honored to recognize Joxe's remarkable contributions and grateful for all he has done to preserve and share this history.
