Please Join Us on Ordained a Unity Minister in 2015, Jacquie Fernández is an award-winning filmmaker and writer who serves as a senior minister at Unity Church of Overland Park. She is the founder of Folx with Faith, an LGBTQIA+ affinity group that gathers for spiritual discussion and healing from religious trauma. You can read Rev. Jacquie's literary offerings in Spirituality and Health, a bi-monthly Unity Publication, available in the UCR bookstore. There will be a workshop following the service that day - details to come!

What belief in your tradition is hardest to defend?
One Power

Unity teaches, “There is only one presence and one power in the universe and in my life, God the Good, Omnipotence.” In a discordant world appearing rife with conflict and suffering, we hold that God has no opposite, and evil isn’t a singular power unto itself. How, then, are we to reconcile systemic injustices, war, and other acts of violence? To the human intellect, this teaching may feel dismissive or even delusional and challenges societal perceptions of reality.

Imagine all of creation forming from an inexhaustible Divine Power so immense, everything we see is derived from That. Next, intuit the center of your consciousness as resonating with an awareness that you are of this All-Powerful Good. Is this less plausible than a devil on your shoulder wielding power, entrapping you into evil deeds? Remove mental distortions of human, ego-based thinking, and what remains is God. And that God is Good.

Does everything happen for a reason?
Yes, and…

My relationship with Creator-Source is a “Yes, and…” relationship. Unity teaching, and my inner wisdom, informs me that I am the creator of my life experience. The ‘reason’ for anything happening is that we manifest the conditions in our lives that are in alignment with our thinking-feeling, human nature -- whether we are aware of it or not. That’s Unity-lingo for “if you spot it, you got it.” We co-create that which is of our own vibrational match. So, is it fate, free will, or both/neither?

Free will is more than conscious choice (our unconquered unconsciousness is frequently steering the ship), and fate is a westernized misunderstanding of karma. There is no grand-puppeteer, and if we’re not doing the inner work, our unmet desires will consistently come up against barriers that our conscious mind does not understand. Yes, everything happens for a reason, and…it’s not usually the reason we think.

What separates genuine spiritual insight from self-delusion?
Personality vs. Individuality

Genuine spiritual insight is characterized by an expansive feeling of knowingness occurring when one’s innate spiritual powers align with the One Mind, “the underlying field of awareness out of which everything arises.” As individuals, we are each a point of power in a universe of Divine Intelligence, capable of discernment between Truth (the Absolute Reality that is Divine Beingness) from the lesser "truth" suited to promulgating the misconceptions of the personality-self.

Transitioning from habitually seeing the world through judgements and the nuanced biases of the mind necessitates a commitment to the practice of letting go of what we think we know to be true. Perpetually surrendering attachment to egoic thinking reveals within us a natural sense of awe and wonder. From this place, we have the capacity to discern spiritual insight from the traps of personality-based ‘self-delusions’, thereby gaining a greater sense of Individuality – one’s unique expression of God-Mind.

Spiritual Evolution Liberates

Religious conversion may be framed through the family lens as betrayal, yet this perspective would be rooted in the fear of the beholder, not that of the spiritual seeker. Spiritual evolution is divinely inspired, not motivated by desire to turn one’s back on their heritage, and sometimes evolution in consciousness results in conversion. Making that choice is simply an individual claiming their Good on a new path that resonates more completely with newfound spiritual beliefs.

When an individual feels called to shift from their inherited doctrine toward a new system of faith, they are choosing to pursue an intimate calling to fulfill their expression of Self. While living as authentic expressions of the Divine aligns us with our purpose to know God, the path we ultimately choose is validated by the inner peace we find. Heritage may provide one's origination story, but it does not define liberation of the soul.
