This recently reached my email and I am very excited to share with everyone. As a former dancer. I know that dance is a way of expressing your feelings and thoughts.

What an Incredible way to share a tale told for years in a different light. This event sheds light on experiencing postpartum mental health, and how one woman used dance to bring awareness.

Albuquerque native and choreographer Julianna Rubio Slager is bringing her experience with postpartum depression to the Nat'l Hispanic Cultural Center through a re-envisioned performance of “La Llorona.” Julianna is the founder and artistic director of non profit resident company, Ballet 5:8 in Chicago. She struggled with intrusive thoughts about harming her children, after the birth of her third child. Fortunately, she sought help thanks to a strong family support system.

The experience changed Julianna's perception of “La Llorona” (the “crying woman”) traditionally told as Maria (La Llorona) - a grieving mother who drowned her children and was condemned to wander endlessly, in search of them. Julianna’s full length ballet asks us to consider, “What if Maria was not a monster? What if she suffered under the weight of postpartum depression, and someone intervened before it turned into tragedy?”

Ballet 5:8 will present “La Llorona” on Oct. 18 at the NHCC in Albuquerque

No one is immune. Help give mama's a voice.

Maternal mental health has to include more than depression.

Anxiety.
OCD.
Intrusive thoughts.
Rage.
Birth trauma.
Psychosis.

Because sometimes postpartum doesn’t look like sadness.

Sometimes it looks like panic.
Constant fear.
Thoughts you can’t shut off.
Anger you don’t recognize.
Reliving your birth over and over.
Feeling completely unlike yourself.

Moms need language for what they’re actually experiencing.

Because you can’t ask for the right help when you don’t even have the words to explain what’s happening.

Maternal mental health is bigger than depression.

And we need to start talking about all of it.
