Robert De Niro appeared alongside Jane Fonda, Bette Midler, Patti Smith, Julia Roberts and others at the “Rise Up, Sing Out Concert for the First Amendment” at New York’s Town Hall. The event was explicitly organized around defending First Amendment freedoms and democratic expression Robert De Niro’s words are devastating precisely because they come from a place of love for his country. He spoke about an America that welcomed his immigrant ancestors and gave generations of Americans extraordinary freedoms and opportunities. And then he said what so many are struggling to articulate: “I want to love my country again. I want my country back.” That isn’t hatred of America. It is the refusal to confuse America with Donald Trump. You can love your country and condemn its president.
You can respect its institutions and demand better from the people entrusted with them. You can cherish the Constitution while sounding the alarm when you believe its principles are being threatened. In fact, democracy depends on people willing to do exactly that. And perhaps the most important part of De Niro’s message wasn’t his anger. It was what came next: organize. Speak. Resist. Because a country does not belong to one president, one party or one Congress. It belongs to its people. And if Americans want their country back, the ballot box is where they take it back. 2026 MIDTERMS. VOTE.
