IT’S A CRICK: Pennsylvanians have been saying it this way for generations and there’s actually history behind it.

“Crick” is an old regional pronunciation of “creek” that took hold across Pennsylvania and the Appalachian region centuries ago. The Commonwealth’s mix of Pennsylvania Dutch, Scots-Irish and other early settlers helped shape a dialect that was passed down from one generation to the next.

That’s why your grandparents said crick. Your parents said crick. And you probably grew up catching minnows, flipping rocks and coming home with wet shoes from the crick.

The map might say creek. Pennsylvania history says CRICK.
