For a student who dreams of becoming a doctor, there is a big difference between learning about medicine in a classroom and actually walking and talking with physicians and medical students who once stood where they are standing.

On Sept. 26, twenty Hartnell College students traveled to Pleasanton to begin the 2026-27 Hartnell Kaiser Medical Scholars Pathway journey with Kaiser Permanente. Ten entered the program for the first time. Ten returned for a second year.

That second number is especially meaningful to Joel Thompson, Director of the Science and Math Institute because in recent years, only three students continued into the second year. This year, Hartnell has a record 10 returning students.

Today, the Power of HSI Symposium brought together Hartnell College, Gavilan College, Monterey Peninsula College and Cabrillo College to look at the impact of HSI investments and, more importantly, what comes next. Over the years, HSI funding has helped grow programs like dual enrollment, strengthen transfer pathways and improve support for first-generation students across the region.

As funding conversations shift on how colleges can sustain this progress moving forward, leaders shared insight on the importance of building successful programs into long-term budgets, planning for sustainability early and continuing to focus on measurable student success.

Thank you to keynote speaker Deborah A. Santiago, co-founder and chief executive officer of Excelencia in Education, for anchoring the day, and event organizers from Hartnell College, Gavilan College, Monterey Peninsula College and Cabrillo College for making today possible.

Since 2000, Hartnell College has proudly served as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, a place where every student has access to opportunity, equity, and belonging.

This week, our students, staff, faculty, and community came together to celebrate through events honoring those we represent.

In many ways, this is a commitment. In others, it's our identity.

Last Friday, the Visual Arts department hosted an opening reception for Order and Chaos: David Ligare & Gary Smith, celebrating the first time these two artists' work has been shown together.

The exhibition juxtaposes Ligare's highly detailed drawings, derived from spontaneous marks made in the wet sand of Big Sur, with Smith's ceramic sculptures based on mathematical and geometric systems. Together, the exhibition explores the relationship between spontaneity and control.

We invite you to experience Order and Chaos, on view through October 8 in the Hartnell College Art Gallery on the main campus.

Our Panthers brought home the W! 🔥

Today’s historic first on our own turf was a celebration of tradition and community. The maroon and gold showed out, came out, and we could not be prouder!
