ReGen Monterey
Recycling, composting, landfill + renewable energy serving the Monterey Peninsula ♻️

It’s the start of the week! Here’s your to get your stretches in before the week ahead. 💪🧘
Our heavy equipment operators start every shift with a stretching and calisthenics routine, an important part of preparing for the physically demanding work they do every day.
Operating a landfill compactor means maneuvering a 100,000+ pound machine up, down and over piles of trash and constantly shifting terrain for hours at a time. Even while seated, operators are continually steering, turning, looking in multiple directions and responding to the movement and vibration of the equipment beneath them.
Taking a few minutes to stretch helps our operators prepare their bodies for the work ahead and is one small part of our larger commitment to working safely.
Whether you’re sitting at a desk, operating heavy equipment or working out in the field, a good stretch is a great way to start the work week healthy, safe and motivated!
It’s AND , which is a good time to answer a question we often receive: Why doesn’t ReGen Monterey and SVR accept compostable or biodegradable bags and foodware in your green curbside organics cart?
Take a look at what a typical compost pile can look like when foodware, bags and other materials are mixed in with food scraps and yard trimmings.
Would you want your food grown in this?
We pride ourselves on protecting the quality and safety of the compost we produce for local agriculture. That starts with keeping contamination out in the first place.
Products marketed as “compostable,” “biodegradable” or environmentally friendly don’t necessarily break down in the same way or at the same rate as food scraps and yard trimmings. And foodware has historically been a source of concern for PFAS, a large class of human-made chemicals sometimes called “forever chemicals.”
Unlike a visible piece of plastic that can be screened out, PFAS exist at the molecular level. Their extremely strong chemical bonds make many of them resistant to the biological processes that break down organic material. That means months of composting and mechanical screening aren’t designed to simply make these chemicals disappear.
That’s one reason we keep our local residential program simple: loose food scraps and yard trimmings only. No bags. No foodware. No trash. 🍎🍂
While we still work on educating the public who still dispose of these materials, staff work hard to remove contamination before material is ground and processed, helping us produce the clean, nutrient-rich compost that local organic farmers want to use on their fields.
This , we’re proud that protecting our agricultural community begins long before compost reaches a farm. It begins at the curb.
Thank you for helping us keep contamination out of our compost, support local farms and contribute to a circular local economy.

Caty and Rocio from our Engineering and Compliance team are having that ! 🙌
They love when we finish a successful week of environmental health compliance. They’re pictured inside our Landfill Gas-to-Energy (LFG) facility, where we collect methane from deep inside the landfill and convert it into renewable power!
High five to previous ReGen leadership who constructed one of the first landfill gas-to-energy plants in the country. Capturing methane helps combat climate change while generating approximately five megawatts of renewable energy—enough to power ReGen’s entire facility and about 4,000 homes!
Our Engineering and Compliance experts work with LFG staff to install and maintain more than 100 landfill gas wells and ensure the system is drawing gas toward our power plant, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while putting that gas to beneficial use.
As we celebrate 75 years, we’re proud of the leadership ReGen has shown in climate action and in turning waste products into valuable resources for our community. ♻️⚡Learn more: regenmonterey.org/landfill-gas-to-energy/

It’s time, and we continue to be motivated by some of our hardest-working frontline employees — people who have dedicated decades to serving our community.
Before another shift begins, Dora Cresencio, Sorter I, pulls on her gloves and gets ready to take on one of the most challenging jobs at ReGen Monterey. 💪 This year, we’re proud to celebrate Dora’s 20th anniversary with us! She was recently honored at a Board of Directors meeting.
Our Materials Recovery Facility sorters help process more than 250 tons of recyclables every day, separating valuable materials while removing contamination and “tanglers” that can damage the public equipment and infrastructure our community relies on.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens after your blue cart is picked up at the curb, it comes to professionals like Dora. The recyclables you carefully collect at home are carefully sorted here, then loaded into semi-trucks headed to manufacturers where they can become new products, keeping materials in circulation and supporting a circular economy. ♻️
Thank you, Dora, for 20 years of hard work and commitment to ReGen Monterey and the community we serve. We appreciate everything you do!

It’s ! 💧
We’d like to thank our Engineering and Environmental Compliance team for the work they do to monitor and test water quality, meet strict environmental regulatory requirements, and uphold our responsibility and mission to be stewards of the surrounding natural environment.
That includes monitoring groundwater beneath our site and managing stormwater runoff across our 300+ acre landfill. As a public agency, protecting public and environmental health is central to our mission. As neighbors to the Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, that responsibility extends beyond our property.
Pictured are Keon and Rocio collecting samples at one of our stormwater ponds, which helps control runoff from the landfill. Our Engineering team also designs systems within the landfill to collect and manage liquids, helping keep them contained and out of the surrounding environment.
Thank you to the team members who do this important work year-round to protect our water and environment!

🎨 As we look back at our 75 years as a special district, we are proud to share how using art to help deliver our message has long been part of ReGen Monterey’s history.
This is especially evident in our Artist in Residence program, which is celebrating its 10th year. During , we’d like to thank the 23 student-artists from CSU Monterey Bay’s Visual and Public Art program who have participated in the program, helping spread our mission of “doing more to waste less” and inspiring a zero-waste culture in our community.
Stay tuned to our social media this month as we highlight our 2026 cohort and look back at some of the most stunning art created here at ReGen Monterey.
And take another look at this piece — what you’re seeing is not a photograph! It’s a salvaged door painted with a depiction of a sorting line inside our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Sorters are illustrated at work while real packaging recovered from the MRF travels down the conveyor line. This exceptional piece was created by Jesse Villarruel, our 2023 Artist in Residence jessev_art
Through the program, student-artists transform materials salvaged from our facility into works of art that are later displayed at .
Regenmonterey.org/artist-in-residence/ has recently been updated with a catalogue of artwork from this storied program.

ReGen Monterey’s district is home to some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. 🌊 We appreciate the volunteers who help keep it that way, coming together for cleanups that protect our national marine sanctuary and the beaches we treasure for outdoor recreation.
This Saturday, September 19, is ! Thank you to organizations like Save Our Shores and Surfrider Monterey County for organizing one of Monterey County and California’s largest volunteer events of the year.
These cleanups do more than remove litter. Volunteers also collect valuable data about the types of trash and recyclable materials being left along our coastline, helping inform public education and advocacy for policies that prevent waste from reaching our beaches in the first place.
Follow Save Our Shores and Surfrider Monterey County to learn about Coastal Cleanup Day opportunities in Monterey County, or visit coastalcleanupday.org to find a California cleanup site near you.
Thank you to all the volunteers helping keep our coast beautiful! 💙🌊

It’s ! 🚛
We’d like to thank the many skilled truck drivers on our team who move materials across our 415-acre facility, support our daily operations and help us meet important environmental requirements. And a shoutout to our amazing mechanics who keep these heavy-duty machines running on some pretty challenging terrain!
Pictured here is one of our water truck drivers in action. More than 800 customer vehicles visit ReGen Monterey each day, and all that traffic, especially on the landfill’s dirt roads, can kick up a lot of dust.
For the safety of our employees and customers, and to help protect local air quality, our water truck drivers regularly spray roads and active work areas to keep that dust down.
It’s one of the many behind-the-scenes jobs that keeps a busy landfill operating safely and responsibly. Thank you to the drivers who keep ReGen moving!
