Auburn University didn't start as Auburn University at all. It was chartered in 1856 as East Alabama Male College and opened its doors in 1859 as a small private liberal arts college. 🎓🐯
The school actually closed from 1861 to 1866 due to the Civil War, reopening afterward in financial trouble. In 1872, the Methodist Church donated the struggling college to the state of Alabama, and it was reborn as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, the first land-grant college in the South established separately from a state university. It went through one more name change, Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899, before finally becoming Auburn University in 1960.

There's something fascinating about a school that's carried four different names over the course of its history. Did you know Auburn started out as East Alabama Male College?
