Don’t guess. Measure.
Proper coating thickness is an important part of getting the best performance from Pond Shield. During application, aim for a minimum wet film thickness of 10 mils — approximately the thickness of three sheets of paper.
Checking your thickness as you work can help you catch thin areas before the coating cures.
Want a closer look at proper coating thickness? Check out KB-05: Pond Shield Wet Film Thickness Guide in the Pond Shield Knowledge Base.

Don’t add water just yet.
Once Pond Shield has been applied, take the time to inspect the finished coating for complete, even coverage. Look over the surface one section at a time and address any areas that may need attention before putting the project into service.

Check out this awesome fountain from the Pond Armor Vault! In this situation, the owner wanted a more formal looking pond and chose black slate tile. Since the slate is porous to begin with it was decided that Pond Shield Clear would be used as the final coating to completely seal all of the tile. Any coating that was exposed above the water line was scuffed with a red Scotchbrite pad to dull the coating and give the final finish a more natural look.

Pro Tip #4: Keep it dry.
Before applying Pond Shield®, always check the weather and plan ahead.
Freshly applied Pond Shield should be kept dry and protected from unexpected water exposure while it cures. A little planning before you start can help keep your project on track.
Check the forecast. Keep it dry.

How thick should Pond Shield be?
Pond Shield is designed to be applied at approximately 10 mil finished thickness — roughly the thickness of three sheets of paper.
Too thin and you may not achieve the protection you’re looking for. Too heavy and the coating can become harder to apply evenly.
KB-05 of the Pond Shield Knowledge Base breaks down what 10 mil actually looks like and gives you a simple reference you can use during application.
