I'm so honored to be speaking at International Dysgraphia Awareness Day this year, during its 5th anniversary. This cause is close to my heart. I've seen what happens when a bright child's ideas get stuck between their head and the page, and I've seen what changes when the adults around them understand why.

Almost none of us were trained on dysgraphia. And here's the part nobody said out loud in grad school: handwriting isn't a hand skill, it's a neurological one. Which means "practice more" was never actually a plan. It was a placeholder for one.

If you're new around here, I'd love to share how Handwriting Solutions actually started.

When I was working as a pediatric OT, handwriting usually got 10 to 15 minutes tucked into a weekly session. I did it the way I was taught, and I watched so many bright, hardworking kids keep trying and still struggle.

Then it hit much closer to home. Toward the end of kindergarten, my daughter was reversing letters and even mirror writing, and she'd get stuck on simple words even though she could memorize a whole book. Her teachers told me to wait and see, and that just didn't sit right with me.

So I did what I'm guessing a lot of you have done late at night. I Googled everything. I read research articles, bought books, and called anyone who would talk to me about dysgraphia, and I was surprised by how little was out there for parents or even for OTs.

What the research kept pointing back to was that kids learn to write best when it's taught explicitly, step by step, in a way that fits how their brain actually learns. That's what we built Handwriting Solutions around, and it's still how we work with families today.

"My third grader still reverses b and d. Is that a big deal?"

It's worth paying attention to. That's not because something is terribly wrong. It's because it tells us letter formation hasn't fully clicked into place yet. In third grade, that matters more than ever, because the writing demands have grown so much. Your child is now expected to write 5–6 sentence paragraphs with capitals, punctuation and spelling patterns all at once. When their brain is still working out which way a b goes, there's less of it left for what they're actually trying to say.

This isn't about effort, and your child is not lazy. It's a skill that needs the right support, and that's exactly what we help families with.
