FACTS CAN CHANGE.

On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister became the first person to officially run a mile in under four minutes.

3:59.4.

Just 46 days later, John Landy did it too—and went even faster.

What changed?

Not the distance.

Not human physiology.

What changed was what people believed was possible.

Leaders, remember this:

Your current circumstances may be real.

Your challenges may be real.

Your setbacks may be real.

But don’t turn today’s facts into tomorrow’s limitations.

Your circumstances tell you where you’re starting.

They don’t get to decide where you’re finishing.

Don’t confuse “It hasn’t happened” with “It can’t happen.”

Facts can change.

Why not you?

Your 100% might be someone else’s 25%.

And their 100% might be your 25% somewhere else.

That’s why comparison is a losing game.

We don’t start from the same place.
We don’t have the same gifts.
We don’t have the same experiences, resources, relationships, or opportunities.

Yet we spend far too much time looking sideways.

Their school is growing faster.
Their team seems stronger.
They got the promotion.
They raised more money.
Their platform is bigger.

And suddenly, we start questioning whether our best is good enough.

Here’s the reminder:

You’re not responsible for someone else’s 25%.
You’re responsible for your 100%.

Give your best.
Develop your gifts.
Learn from those ahead of you.
Get a little better every day.

But stop running someone else’s race.

Run yours.

Who protects the mission when leaders change, board members rotate, and the world around the school keeps changing?

The Board.

Today I had the opportunity to work with the Board and leadership of Dillard Academy Charter School as they prepare to begin their 25th year of serving children and families in Goldsboro, NC.

Twenty-five years doesn’t happen by accident.

It takes committed educators.
Strong leadership.
Families who believe in the school.
Community support.

And it takes people willing to accept the responsibility of governance.

Our work today wasn’t simply about roles and responsibilities. We wrestled with bigger questions:

Why does our organization exist?
What promise have we made to students and families?
What must remain true as the organization changes?
What should be measurably different three years from now?
What decisions today could unintentionally move us away from our mission?

Then we moved from VISION → GOALS → OVERSIGHT.

Because one of the most important responsibilities of a board is not simply protecting what an organization has been.

It’s governing toward what it can become.

Congratulations to the Dillard Academy Board and leadership team on nearly 25 years of service, impact, and commitment to the Goldsboro community.

Here’s to building the governance foundation for the next 25.

Every board faces urgent issues.

The best boards refuse to let urgency replace strategy.

Governance is about leading toward the future, not simply reacting to the present.

Spent the morning with the incredible staff at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy for a session on REAL — Relationships, Equipping, Attitude, Leadership.

What struck me walking into that room: nearly half this staff has given 10+ years to this school. That’s not a statistic. That’s decades of proven academics, built by people who showed up on the hard days, not just the easy ones.

We talked about what it actually takes to become the adult students need most:

🔹 Rules without relationship lead to resistance
🔹 Leadership is measured by who grows because of you.
🔹 Beliefs drive behaviors.
🔹 Your legacy is what continues because you were here.

The truth is, this staff was already living most of it before I ever walked in the door. My job today was just to name it — and ask them to do it on purpose, every day, not just by instinct.

If you live in Western North Carolina and are looking for a place to learn or work, I’d highly recommend TJCA. They’re consistently ranked as a top charter school in Western NC, and among the best high schools in the state and nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Grateful for schools like this that invest in their people, not just their programs. Thank you for having me.

Committees Aren’t Supposed to Just Report.

If your committee meeting ends with…

“Here’s what we talked about…”

…you’re missing one of the committee’s greatest responsibilities.

Too many committees exist to give updates.

High-performing committees exist to create momentum.

The Finance Committee shouldn’t simply review the numbers.

It should identify trends, anticipate risks, and bring thoughtful recommendations to the board.

The Governance Committee shouldn’t just fill vacancies.

It should develop future board leaders, improve orientation, and strengthen the board’s effectiveness.

The Academic Committee shouldn’t simply present test scores.

It should help the board understand whether students are making meaningful progress toward the mission.

The full board shouldn’t be doing committee work.

Committees should be doing the board’s work between board meetings.

When committees prepare, analyze, and recommend, board meetings become shorter, more strategic, and focused on the decisions that matter most.

Things don’t go wrong. They start wrong.

Often, they start when committees become reporting groups instead of working groups.

Ask yourself:

Does your committee leave every meeting with clear recommendations—or just another report?

Great boards don't recruit because they have an empty chair.

They recruit because they have a vision for the future.

Governance Isn’t the Fruit. It’s the Root.

Everyone wants the fruit.

Higher student achievement.

Stronger enrollment.

Healthy finances.

Outstanding teachers.

A thriving culture.

But here’s what I’ve learned after serving on boards, leading schools, and working with hundreds of organizations across the country…

You can’t fix the fruit by polishing the branches.

Every result an organization produces grows from something deeper.

The roots are governance.

When the roots are healthy, leaders have clarity. Teams stay aligned. Difficult decisions become easier. Resources are allocated wisely. The mission remains the priority.

When the roots are weak, the symptoms eventually appear above ground—declining enrollment, financial strain, leadership turnover, board conflict, and mission drift.

Things don’t go wrong. They start wrong.

The good news?

Strong governance isn’t about having perfect board members. It’s about building intentional systems that help good people make great decisions together.

This simple tree has become one of my favorite ways to explain why governance matters.

If you’re a Board Chair, Executive Director, Head of School, CEO, or nonprofit leader…

Don’t spend all your time chasing the fruit. Strengthen the roots.

What part of your organization’s “roots” needs the most attention right now?
