JUST ADDED! The RNA Institute brings Hop the Helix to this year's Maker Faire!
Hop the Helix is an interactive step-dance video game powered by a desktop AI supercomputer. Players select a song - each step danced adds a letter to your RNA sequence. As the RNA grows, it is translated into protein code and live-folded into a protein structure. Players dance RNA and watch it fold! This is an educational outreach tool used to demonstrate the relationship between sequence and structure in biology; developed by the RNA Institute at The University at Albany (SUNY).

This is going to be so cool! And...HOT! This year we welcome Jeremy Entwistle of SPARK and French Mountain Studios. See a professional foundry operation where participants design original artwork, carve it into a sand mold, and watch as instructors pour liquid aluminum into every mold. Their bio-foundry system heats and melts aluminum with a renewable fuel, waste vegetable oil! Every artist takes home a cast aluminum tile the same day!
SPARK maps directly to NYS and national curriculum frameworks across visual arts, science, and engineering design. Metal casting is transformative, permanent, and reliant on process — which makes it one of the most direct ways to teach real-world decision-making.

Electric City Maker Faire will return to Union College’s beautiful campus in Schenectady, NY on October 4th 2026 from 11 am - 4 pm. The biennial event is hosted by the Union College Maker Web, and for a smaller event it has a lot to offer! This year I'll again be sharing projects for families from my books and articles for Make: Magazine, including the giant paper straw pyramid community build from PAPER INVENTIONS, as well as the wild quilling and light-up bases that were so popular at Maker Faires around the state this past year. Come try out Chibitronics new Launchpad LEDs and batteries and check out the other projects on display. Be sure to come say Hi!
