Our OwLS (Outreach with Library Students) are back with why they think we should read banned books.
Have you read a banned book?
Our Outreach students share some they've read. You may be surprised by what they say.
P.s. The Hunger Games has been challenged for violence and dark themes in school districts and local libraries.
Some people don't want you to read these books, but we do! For Banned Books Week (this week!) our book display features to top banned books of 2025.
Come on into the library and they are in the display cases to your right.
Be a rebel, check one out.

BACON! ๐ฅ
Love it or hate it, this promises to be an interesting talk.
Next week, UCALL and the library are hosting Mark A. Johnson, author of American Bacon: The History of a Food Phenomenon.
Mark your calendars:
Tuesday, October 6, at 4 p.m.
Reamer Auditorium
Will there be bacon? All the types? Come find out!
It's Hispanic Heritage Month! Solen and Margarita share five movies you can watch with our streaming services:
1. Las Cholitas (on Kanopy)
2. La Llorona (on Kanopy)
3. Sin Nombre (on Swank Digital Campus)
4. Adios Amor (on Docuseek)
5. ยกLas Sandanistas! (on Kanopy)
See the link in our bio for access to these movies (and more) through our streaming services.
There are so many things you can do at the library service desk!
Let's name a few:
- take out books, of course, but also request that books be taken out for you
- access resources your professor has put on course reserves, so you don't have to pay for them
- take out chargers, laptops, and iPads
And more. Come on in! The library service desk is just your left as you walk into the doors.
Did you know you could access free subscriptions to the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, local newspapers, and more with your Union login?

Today, we have a mini takeover:
Hello! My name is Addison Rosenko (Class of '29) and I am a student worker in Special Collections and Archives! Here I assist with archival research and processing along with compiling exhibits of some of the interesting stuff housed in the collections.
Just this past ReUnion Weekend, I assembled an exhibit looking at the names and lives of the people whom our Minerva Houses are named after. Many of these people and families have been prominent figures in the Union community for many years now, so it was fascinating to take a look at their pasts and accomplishments.
From photographs to 1920s textbooks, there's something bound to interest everybody; if there is something you would like to research, write about, or just look at for fun, schedule an appointment with SCA to take a look!
Not all research databases are built the same... especially if you're a CS major!
ACM Digital Library has what JSTOR doesn't: full proceedings from major computing conferences like SIGGRAPH, CHI, and PLDI, current journal articles, BibTeX exports for easy citations, and links to code and datasets tied directly to papers.
JSTOR skews heavily toward humanities and social sciences, and its CS coverage is limited and often years behind.
If you're writing a paper, doing a lit review, or just diving into a topic, ACM Digital Library is the right tool for computer science research.
And you have access with your Union credentials (see link in bio)!
