China has switched on what it describes as the world’s first underwater data center directly powered by offshore wind.

Located off the coast of Shanghai in the Lin-gang Special Area, the Shanghai Lingang Undersea Data Center combines offshore wind power with computing infrastructure beneath the sea. The first phase is now operating at 2.3 megawatts, while the project is planned to eventually reach 24 megawatts.

One of the most interesting parts isn’t the servers themselves — it’s how the facility stays cool.

Instead of relying on conventional freshwater-based cooling systems, the underwater modules use the surrounding seawater as a natural heat sink. A copper-pipe heat-exchange system transfers heat away from the equipment, and developers say the approach can reduce electricity consumption by 22.8%.

The project is also connected directly to offshore wind power. More than 95% of its electricity is expected to come from renewable sources, according to project officials.

The first phase includes a submerged data module, with the broader project designed to expand in stages. The underwater approach also reduces the need for land and eliminates freshwater use for the cooling process, according to the project developers.

It’s a very different way of thinking about data-center infrastructure.

Instead of building another massive facility on land and then using large amounts of energy to keep the servers cool, engineers are taking advantage of an environment that naturally surrounds the equipment with a huge heat sink.

Offshore wind provides the electricity.

The ocean provides the cooling environment.

And the computers operate beneath the waves.

As demand for AI and other computing services continues to grow, projects like this are testing whether energy, cooling and computing can be designed together rather than treated as separate problems.

For generations, younger adults were expected to outperform their parents on cognitive tests, but that pattern has begun reversing across much of the developed world.

OECD data show literacy and numeracy stagnating or declining in many countries, while researchers report weaker attention, memory, reasoning, and academic performance among younger cohorts.

Screens are not the sole proven cause, but classroom device use is repeatedly associated with distraction and weaker learning.

Denmark responded by urging phone-free schools, limiting unnecessary computer and tablet use, and investing 540 million kroner in physical books.

By 2025, 65 percent of Danish students attended schools banning phones on campus, up from 40 percent in 2022.

Across OECD countries, students in phone-ban schools were about 13 percent less likely to report digital distraction.

Denmark’s test scores have not yet rebounded, but its classrooms are testing a striking idea.
