A his-and-her bathroom for a pair of teens at our Laurelhurst remodel. The millwork is custom, down to the oak cabinet pulls, which we accented with clover-shaped brass backplates. The floor is a classic black-and-white marble mosaic, while the tub enclosure is covered in dusty blue subway tiles. It’s an unexpected mix, but the elements play together nicely.

My favorite piece from this year’s Seattle Art Fair: an incredible, richly imagined portrait by Madrid-based artist Nikoleta Sekulovic. The painting depicts British novelist and playwright Daphne Du Maurier (1907-1989), part of a series paying homage to important female figures - poets, philosophers, mathematicians.

Home office at our Laurelhurst project.
The brief: Turn a dark, dated and drafty room into something inviting, streamlined and masculine.
The solution: Install a bay window, lean into a classic navy color scheme (with wallpaper inspired by men’s suiting), replace all lighting, and ditch the super heavy, dark furniture. Scroll to see a “before” and “during.”

An en-suite at our Laurelhurst lake house. Maybe the prettiest room in the place!
The room involved an unusual design dilemma - the tub overlooks the front yard at street level. We needed privacy and water proofing, of course. But we also wanted a solution that looked chic and intentional from the inside AND unified from the outside. The solution: cafe curtains in a custom pistachio-and-cream stripe fabricated in waterproof polyester.

When I moved to Southern California after college I saw in person for the first time all the giants of contemporary art - Alex Katz, Jasper Johns, Barbara Kruger, Kara Walker, Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, Marina Abramovic, Ed Ruscha. So many! It was an incredible education. Perhaps my favorite, then and now, was David Hockney. May he rest in peace.

An artist’s studio is a work of art all on its own. Inside Carla Paine’s studio on her family’s small farm outside Olympia. Everything felt accidentally-just-so, like a series of still lifes.
