Throwback to our August SPACE Matchbox! 🪐🚀🛸These budding astronauts made happy, silly memories while creating jet packs and space helmets, mapping the phases of the moon with Oreos, playing with galaxy-themed sensory play dough, and making aliens out of clay. Delightful Distraction: we have liftoff!!

During our August Parent Chat on Zoom, we were reflecting on some of the various and specific pain points that get triggered during different times of the year for families who have a child with cancer.
Right now, most kids around the region are strapping on their backpacks and posing for “Back-to-School” photos on their front porch. Meanwhile, plenty of TLC parents are grappling with the heartache of knowing their child is missing out on this exciting fall tradition.
So...why does Matchbox Day matter?
When we share a monthly dose of delightful distraction with families, we ease the sting of these triggering pain points. We help families create happy memories that will be tucked in alongside painful experiences, casting a bit of light in a season that often feels pretty dark.
When families receive their September HAPPY BIRTHDAY Matchbox, they will find joy and connection that will buoy their spirits and lighten their load. You can help make the magic happen by shopping our Wish List. There are just a few items waiting to be purchase—let’s clear the list TODAY! Link in bio.
Thank you for shining your light for TLC families!

Our September Matchbox theme is HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎂🎉🎈One of our FAVORITE elements of the Birthday Matchbox is a fun and silly game we call PASS THE PRESENT.
Each family receives a fun box full of trinkets and toys, which has been wrapped with six layers of paper. Each layer of wrapping also has a silly prompt. Families sit in a circle and pass the present around. Each person unwraps one layer, then they have to do whatever the prompt tells them.
The prompts are SILLY, like:
“Dance like you’re celebrating your 97th birthday!”
or
“Go find some clean un**es and wear them on your head!”
or
“Everyone gets to tickle you for 10 seconds!”
This game creates just as many squeals of delight as you’d imagine. These pictures tell the whole story!
Want to join the fun? Shop our wish list and help us gather all the materials we need to prepare Birthday Matchboxes for 90 families across the PNW! Link in bio.

More fun moments from our July Out of the Box event. Such a fun day!!
Last month’s Out of the Box event was knock-your-socks-off AMAZING. Here’s the breakdown:
20 families
77 volunteers
200+ fresh-off-the-griddle pancakes
10 hilarious carnival booths
2 giant inflatables
60 minutes of meaningful parent connection (while kids happily played with volunteers)
Countless gold medal moments of joy 🏅
We are so very thankful for our faithful supporters and volunteers who make these magical moments happen, and for the TLC families who entrust us with their time and presence. Here’s what we heard from one family (who drove to OOTB all the way from Oregon!) after joining us at OOTB:
“The moment we walked into our first TLC event, I was blown away by everyone there. Almost instantly, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders and found myself genuinely smiling again. The volunteers gave our family something we hadn’t felt in a long time: joy.
Every single one of them wants to be there, serving families who are walking through one of the darkest seasons of their lives. They don’t just welcome you, they remember you. They remember your kids, your names, and your story. That kind of love and kindness is something truly special.
We often get asked “ how can I help?” The Light Collective acts and helps every single day.”
Thank you for making a brighter way for families!

FUN GAME ALERT! This is a great game to beat summertime boredom. It’s from our July OLYMPICS Matchbox. When families open their July box, they will see an “official” letter from the International Olympic Committee outlining the new games they want to add to the Summer and Winter Olympics. But first, the games must be tested! Families will spend the day going for the gold as they play 10 silly games, making the very best memories along the way.
Don’t forget to shop our wish list! Thank you for helping us share these happy moments with families! (Link in bio)
We call this game SNOW CARVING:
Fill a food storage container with flour and pack it in full, then turn it upside down on a plate or tray (kind of like making a sand castle). Place a small piece of candy on top.
Players take turns using a butter knife to carefully carve a bit of “snow” from the mound...just don’t be the one who causes the candy on top to fall!
This game starts off kind of slow, but the more you carve the more hilariously intense it becomes! WARNING: At the end, this game might devolve into a floury extravaganza of sensory play...so feel free to enjoy this activity outdoors. 😉
