This Week’s Torah Portion: Nitzavim

Nitzavim means “standing.” And it begins with a striking image: the entire community standing together.

Not just the leaders. Not just the scholars. Not just the people who feel certain they belong.

Everyone.

Nitzavim reminds us that Jewish community is not built around one kind of person or one kind of journey. We stand together, each of us bringing our own story, our own questions, and our own way of finding meaning.

And then the Torah offers another beautiful idea: what we need is not somewhere far away. It is not beyond us. The wisdom is already close—in our words, in our hearts, and in what we choose to do.

During Elul, as we reflect on where we’ve been and who we want to become, Nitzavim offers a powerful reminder:
Not one person alone. We stand together. Everyone has a place here.

This Week’s Torah Portion: Ki Tavo

Masa means journey. Ki Tavo means “when you come.” So what happens when we arrive?

Ki Tavo begins with the Israelites bringing their first fruits: not simply as an offering, but as an act of gratitude. It asks us to recognize what we’ve been given, remember the journey that brought us here, and consider what we do with our blessings.

And then the Torah gets complicated. There are blessings. There are curses. There are consequences. There is plenty to wrestle with.

That’s Torah. We don’t have to agree with every word to pull up a chair, ask questions, argue, learn, and find meaning together.

Especially during Elul, as we begin looking back at the year behind us and toward the one ahead, Ki Tavo gives us a pretty good question to sit with.
