Path with Art fosters the restoration of individuals, groups, and society from the effects of trauma through arts engagement and community-building.

Path with Art is driven by its Vision: A world where arts engagement is recognized as transformative––connecting the individual with self, the self with community, and communities with society. In this world, the power of arts engagement is available for all. Since 2008, Path with Art has been at the forefront of a growing international movement that utilizes the power of art as a means to bring dignity, awareness, and healing to the complexities of the issues surrounding homelessness, and recovery from trauma. As a long-time leader in this field, the Path with Art model is currently being sought out and recognized by communities both nationally and internationally.

When Wendy first connected with Path with Art in 2017, she was searching for something that made her feel alive.

Since then, she’s become deeply engaged in our visual arts classes. In 2024, she earned a Certificate of Achievement recognizing the discipline and focus she brought to her creative practice. She also joined our Peer Leadership Program as a Path with Art Ambassador, volunteering her time to support and connect with her peers.

Along the way, we’ve watched Wendy grow more comfortable sharing her creativity with others.

That came full circle when she led two basket-weaving workshops. Basket weaving can be challenging for beginners, but Wendy patiently guided participants through moments of frustration, answering questions and encouraging people as they learned.

Wendy’s journey is powerful, inspiring, and a reminder that creative practice is about more than what we make. It can offer a path back to creativity, connection, and purpose when those things have been lost or buried beneath survival.

Thank you Wendy Sanaye for sharing your story with us.

Shända and Chris found something in art that changed their lives. Their stories, featured in a recent Seattle Times article, are part of why we’re working to make arts opportunities accessible to more people.

Every year, we’ve grown, ensuring our free community arts programs reach more people. But the need is great. Opportunities for trauma-informed art need to be accessible to everyone who could benefit from them.

One way we see that happening is through arts prescribing, often known as social prescribing. What if your healthcare provider could refer you to a dance class, choir, or art workshop as part of your care? And what if the cost was covered by insurance? 🤯

It doesn’t have to be mind blowing. Arts prescribing is already happening in communities across the US and UK. And we’re working to bring it to Washington State.

“Are we just going to walk past that person?”

Thirty years ago, our CEO, Holly Jacobson, asked her sister that question while walking past someone lying on the sidewalk in NYC.

Today, she’s asking a deeper question about the crisis here in Seattle: Why don’t we invest more in the cost-effective, scalable, and proven tools we already have?

In a new Seattle Times op-ed, Holly makes the case that the arts are part of the answer.

For the last 13 years, Holly has seen firsthand how trauma-informed arts engagement in a supportive community can help people rebuild connection, confidence, and a sense of future.

Read Holly’s op-ed, “Art isn’t a luxury — it’s an intervention.” through the link in our bio.
