August 1st was the final day of the mid-term examinations at Geden Choeling Nunnery, the oldest Tibetan Buddhist nunnery in Dharamsala, India,home to about 200 nuns. If you are anywhere near Seattle this weekend, come to Tibet Fest! The Tibetan Nuns Project will be there with a table. Saturday August 8, 11-6 and Sundat August 9th, 12-5, Seattle Center Armory.

For generations, Tibetan culture has been sustained through its language, spiritual traditions, monastic institutions, and the dedication of Buddhist practitioners. Part of the Tibetan Nuns Project mission is “to establish, strengthen, and support educational institutions to sustain Tibetan religion and culture.” On July 1st, a sinister new Chinese law promoting linguistic, cultural, and ideological assimilation came into effect. Part of it mandates a “national common language” and prohibits any organization or individual from obstructing its dissemination. In practice, this may criminalize efforts by Tibetan communities to preserve and promote their own language in their own land. Although we cannot directly change the situation inside Tibet, we can help Tibetans preserve their identity in exile.
