Aaron Farinacci, the man accused of intentionally starting the devastating Old Trails Fire in Spokane County, allegedly told detectives he had been planning the fire for about two weeks and deliberately waited for hot, dry and windy conditions.

According to court documents, Farinacci said he chose the area near West Euclid and Old Trails roads because he believed the fire would become severe, though he claimed he did not expect it to grow as large as it did.

Investigators say Farinacci also admitted to setting 25 other fires since the summer of 2025. Detectives had corroborated evidence connecting him to at least four of the fires he described, and prosecutors have sought four additional first-degree arson charges while indicating more charges could follow as the investigation continues. The fires he allegedly admitted setting include the Aubrey White Fire and Meenach Fire in July 2025.

Court documents also describe Farinacci telling investigators about his fascination with fire and methods he allegedly used to avoid suspicion. Authorities say his admissions and their investigation are now being compared against other fires throughout the Spokane area.

Farinacci also has a serious criminal history. In 2010, he shot and killed his father in Mesa, Arizona, following an argument about washing dishes. He later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault rather than being convicted of murder.

The new allegations are especially significant because investigators say the Old Trails Fire wasn’t simply an opportunistic ignition: Farinacci allegedly researched conditions and selected a day when the weather could help the flames spread. He remains accused, and the new arson allegations have not been proven in court.

Sydney Sweeney is giving back to Spokane. The Euphoria actress was spotted volunteering at the Women & Children’s Free Restaurant and Community Kitchen, where she helped serve free meals to people affected by the Spokane Area Complex Fire.

With wildfires continuing to impact communities across the Spokane area, local nonprofits and volunteers have been providing meals, supplies, and other essential support to those displaced by the fires. Sweeney’s visit has been widely praised, with many applauding her for spending time helping her hometown during a challenging week.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires, and a huge thank you to all of the volunteers and first responders continuing to support the community.

The smoke is now reaching Western Washington. While Leavenworth experienced the state’s worst air quality this week, Seattle is also seeing hazy skies and deteriorating air quality today. How bad was the smoke in Leavenworth this week? 🌫️😳

At the peak of the wildfire smoke, Leavenworth recorded AQI readings as high as 3,592 on some uncapped air quality sensors far beyond the U.S. Air Quality Index’s official “Hazardous” category, which tops out at 500.

To put that into perspective, experts estimate that spending just one hour outside in those conditions was roughly the equivalent of smoking six ci******es. The comparison comes from an AQI-to-cigarette calculator and is intended to illustrate the amount of fine particulate pollution (PM2.5) being inhaled not that wildfire smoke and ci******es are identical health risks.

The dangerous air was driven by smoke from the rapidly growing Little Giant Fire and other wildfires burning in Chelan County. Officials urged people to stay indoors, keep windows closed, use air filtration when possible, and wear an N95 mask if they needed to be outside for extended periods.

Air quality is expected to improve as onshore winds return, but the smoke this week served as a stark reminder of how quickly wildfire conditions can create serious health risks across Washington.

Have you ever experienced smoke this bad in Washington?

Seattle just had its coolest July in 10 years. July 2026 finished with an average temperature of 66.9° at Sea-Tac, making it the city’s coolest July since 2016 and slightly below the long-term average of 67.1°.

With more marine layer and fewer scorching days, it was a noticeably milder month than usual.

But don’t get too comfortable the heat is expected to return this week, with temperatures climbing into the 80s and highs around 86° on Thursday.

A Link light rail train reportedly derailed near Seattle’s International District shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday, causing major service disruptions as thousands of fans were leaving Ed Sheeran’s sold-out concert at Lumen Field. Riders described seeing sparks before the train came to a stop, with service halted and crowds left waiting for hours as many were told to find alternate transportation.

Videos from the scene appear to show the out-of-service train off the tracks as emergency crews responded. Early reports indicate the train was not carrying passengers at the time of the derailment, and there have been no confirmed reports of injuries. The cause of the incident has not yet been announced.
