Hello Pooptober/FecalweenšŸŽƒšŸ’©
🪲Dung beetle grub, carving its own jack-o’-lantern.
Should I keep going? And what other poems or songs should I lamp**p? Suggestions below.

šŸ”„ of course when talking about a firebrat being ā€œintoā€ a book, you mean ā€œeatingā€ a book, right? Well that’s what I mean.
I didn’t know what a firebrat was until the other day. And I can’t believe these things eluded me for so long. They’re like silverfish except they like to hang out in warm, cozy spots, like by furnaces and things. They’d probably also like to hang out with old folks in sweaters during the summer.
What other books would they be into? Bonfire of the Vanities, perhaps?šŸ“š

🪲Meet the water lettuce weevil — native to South and Central America, and it only eats water lettuce🄬
🪲Here’s what they do:
Females chew tiny holes in the leaves to lay their eggs, sealing each one with a black protective coating. When the larvae hatch, they tunnel straight into the spongy leaf tissue, feeding from the inside out. That tunneling floods air-filled cells that normally keep the lettuce buoyant, until the whole thing waterlogs and sinks.

The full life cycle — egg to adult — takes about 4–6 weeks, and up to three generations can hatch in a single season. From what I’ve read, this tiny weevil can crash a full water lettuce infestation in under two years. I guess that’s quick?
Any water lettuce fans out there? Do you hate the weevils?

šŸ¦—šŸ¢NEW COMICšŸ¦—šŸ¢
It lives in a hole, eats p**p, and gets eaten. But without it, the whole burrow ecosystem would be a lot more gross.
Part 3 of 4 of my gopher tortoise burrow series. Can you guess who’s coming next?

PS I’m getting conflicting info—does anybody know if these guys live exclusively in gopher tortoise holes or not? Thank you in advance.

Also thank you to those who are helping this weird ecosystem created by the gopher tortoise:

Gopher Tortoise Council

🐢🐸 NEW COMIC🐸🐢
The gopher frog doesn’t ask for much. Just a borrowed burrow, a pond to breed in, and for us to stop destroying the only habitat it’s ever known—that being the longleaf pine forests that gopher tortoises dig into.
They come out of their tunnels to breed in ephemeral ponds—which is an amazing term that’s better than vernal pool. Vernal pool is great too but I digress.
You can tell the tennant of the gopher tortoise is renting space because it sounds like a snoring person when it sings šŸ’¤

🐢NEW COMIC🐢Get to know the gopher tortoise! It welcomes the whole neighborhood into its burrow. A true keystone species, helping construct whole ecosystems in the dwindling longpine forests of the American South.
Over 350 species shelter in its burrows. Rent free. No questions asked. Meanwhile, we keep bulldozing the landlord.

šŸ¦you know, there are other creatures besides oddly shaped raccoons in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s a little smattering.

I was thinking about turbots and burbots today, as one often does. And I decided to post about flatfish, which are some of my favorite fish.
Soon I’ll make a turbot and burbot post. Until then, enjoy this flattery of comics (get it?).
