Nine wonderful years of marriage. The whole gamut of emotions and experiences that have riddled our lives over this past decade were forging moments. We’re as fused as ever and entangled on a quantum level. It’s a wonderful thing.

Due to opposing work schedules, I won't be able to spend many waking hours with my wife on our eighth anniversary, today. This morning, as I was realizing this fact out loud, Danielle looked at me and shrugged. "We do get to spend every other day together and that's pretty great." I had nothing to say to rebut, refute or enhance this sentiment. Amidst the years of being able to be as free as we please, the years when we've been restricted, be it due to medical, financial, or family hurdles, have been the ones for which we've had the greatest appreciation for each other. She's the exact kind of person you would hope enjoys your presence as much as you cherish theirs. Like two trees growing entwined, we ground, support and nourish each other. I love her to smithereens.

Tomorrow night!

Tomorrow, my second Dry Bar Comedy special will be released. It will also mark 5 years since a truck hit me while I was crossing the street and I almost died. My wife pointed this coincidence out to me, since I hadn't noticed, and that itself has given me pause. A couple of quick thoughts:

-I don't remember much of my time in the hospital. Flashes of restless nights, physical therapy and blurry faces are all that I can grasp. A couple of memories of thoughts exist, including touching my head and saying, "Oh no! Is it all still in there?!" I've written things down here and there, but most of my comedy lives in my head. I sat on my bed and tried to imagine how I would segue, if I had to do a 20 minute set that night. Would it still flow? Could I link bits together? Would I be ever able to think of anything new? To my relief, I could still make out the rough edges and how to fit them together, but I never imagined I'd have the opportunity or ability to record and release a second special, five years later.

-A lot has happened since that first one was filmed, both to me and everyone else. When the pandemic hit, I was getting ready to take another crack at being a fulltime, traveling comedian. My last real attempt was curtailed by a pickup truck; this time, the audiences went away. Like most comedians, I subsisted for months on Zoom shows and the rare live performance that was seldom for more than a few people. When the opportunity to record a second Dry Bar special presented itself, I leapt at the opportunity to line it up with my vaccination and desire to get out to see people again, regardless of how sharp I was feeling.

I have worked with countless talented comedians throughout my career, many of whom you've never heard. I've seen others who couldn't elicit even a smile out of me go on to dominate and make all of the money. All this to say that this can be a cold industry and often driven by dumb luck. While I've had my share of bumps, I've also had a couple of breaks that have changed my life. Believe me when I say that this is further than I thought I would get. I'm not planning on stopping, but I can honestly say that every year of life can have a way of having a drastic impact on your barometer for success. I'm sure we've all pondered this lately.
