One more not so hidden gem but more of a unique take on a well known entity.

Captured at my photowalk for Photographic Center Northwest’s Chase the Light event this past weekend.

Do you prefer a classic take on an oldie but goodie, or do you like to try to flip the script?

Seattle Hidden Gems

As someone who’s lead hundreds of photowalks in Seattle over the years I have a few fave spots that still remain somewhat quiet, yet filled with amazing views.

Recently PCNW has been doing a “hidden gems” challenge as a part of their annual Chase the Light Photography and Fundraising event. So here are a couple of snaps of one of my fave hidden gems. These may feature known elements, but from a less common perspective 😉.

Polacon NYC 2026 day w recap, a sampling of images captured during a somewhat early morning photowalk through Chinatown, and across the Manhattan Bridge

An early morning stop in Astoria, on a recent trip to the Oregon Coast. I woke up crazy early on the last day of this trip, and when I looked at the weather outside, I noticed a little fog.

My plans included driving through Astoria, and I thought, I bet the Astoria-Megler bridge will look cool in the fog and here's the result.

I set up my fave tripod (Bucky!), and created some longer exposures. This allowed me the opportunity to slow down the water and let the fog really sink in.

I'm not sure I'll ever tire of this spot on the Oregon Coast. Likely one of the most photographed rock formations in Oregon: Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach.

I've been to this spot at least 15 - 20 times over the years.

So, when you've been to a spot so many times, how do you find a new way to photograph it? In this instance, I'm using a bit of a slow shutter speed and moving the camera to create a slight sense of motion blur.

Sunset at Seaside

I love the Oregon coast, and a fave spot is Seaside, a small city just north of Cannon Beach. In the off-season, you can find hotels right on the beach for a reasonable price.
