"This is the best time in the history of humanity."

That's how Sanjay Srivatsan, scientific co-director of AI BioDesign, describes this moment for biology on KING 5's HealthLink.

For centuries, scientists have worked to understand life's building blocks. Now, researchers from the Allen Institute, Fred Hutch, and UW Medicine are using AI to design proteins that nature never made, with the goal of new therapies from RNA vaccines to CAR T-cells for cancer.

Twenty years ago, on this day in 2006, Allen Institute for Brain Science announced the completion of our inaugural project: a web-based, 3D map of gene expression in the mouse brain providing scientists with a level of data previously not available.

What if we could engineer biology as reliably as we engineer software?

That’s the vision behind AI BioDesign, a new collaboration between the Allen Institute, UW Medicine, and Fred Hutch Cancer Center to combine AI and experimental biology in order to build molecules that have never existed in nature.

AI BioDesign is powered by Seattle’s science ecosystem and built to be openly shared.

We loved welcoming everyone Inside Open Science! Last Saturday, for the very first time, we opened our doors to the public for a special chance to see where the science happens.

Open science is a set of principles, practices, and standards for making scientific resources openly available to the community. is our annual celebration of these goals and this effort. Thank you to everyone who visited The Allen Institute to take a look inside our labs and talk with our scientists about their work!

Could this new brain map help fight diseases like ALS and dementia?

The brain’s motor cortex is as important as it sounds. It plans, controls, and executes voluntary muscle movements like playing catch, chewing food, or writing your name. Our scientists and collaborators have created the most detailed map yet of the mouse motor cortex, identifying 16 distinct subregions with their own patterns of connections.

The findings reveal new precision in how the brain plans and controls movement. Built using 547 experiments and the Allen Institute’s foundational connectivity atlas, the new map shows how motor cortex regions connect with areas involved in movement, sensation, planning, and decision-making.

This precision map gives researchers a shared reference for studying the motor cortex, and could help advance understanding of diseases such as ALS, which destroys cells that send signals to the muscles, and frontotemporal dementia, which damages the frontal part of the brain that dictates personality, behavior, and language.

Nature has been inventing proteins for billions of years, but it hasn't tried everything. David Baker co-leads AI BioDesign, our new accelerator in collaboration with UW Medicine and Fred Hutch, to design molecules that could break down plastic, target cancer with precision, and switch genes on and off.

About 1 in 3 people lives with a neurological or brain condition such as Alzheimers, depression, or addiction. We need to speed up our understanding of how the human brain works so we can accelerate progress toward new treatments and therapies.

We launched the Brain Health Accelerator to do just that. In partnership with the Bezos family, Amazon Web services, Everything.ALS and a global network of collaborators, we aim to understand what drives brain disease starting with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, Huntington's, and Lewy Body Dementia.
