Medically complex siblings. Diagnosis include spina bifida, hydrocephalus, tethered cord syndrome etc At that stage he couldn't even sit without support.

Luca is a loveable, determined 10 year old Irish boy who now lives in the USA and brings smiles to everyone he meets. Luca has Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus as well as other related conditions including slit ventricle syndrome, cortical visual impairment, chiari malformation, hip dysplasia, club foot, tibial torsion, central sleep apnoea, sensory processing disorder and asthma. Luca was delivered by c-section in February 2011 and transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital Dublin by ambulance when he was 5 hours old. He had his back opening closed when he was 2 days old and had a shunt inserted into his brain (the shunt drains cerebrospinal fluid from his brain into his stomach to stop the fluid compressing his brain) when he was 1 week old. Luca has had a difficult few years since with 30 general anaesthetics, including 17 for lifesaving brain surgeries to control his hydrocephalus. Luca has no feeling from his knees down and was never expected to walk or crawl. Luca has been doing intensive physiotherapy since November 2013, when he was 2.5 years old. After his initial 3 weeks of intensive therapy he was able to sit up with no support, go from lying to sitting and was bum shuffling and army crawling around on the floor. Luca is now walking with the aid of splints and a walker and started walking with crutches in April 2019. You can also follow his progress on Instagram at @gosuperluca

Another appointment at our amazing clinic.

Thankfully his tail is looking much better and is healing well now that the infection has been hit with the right combination of antibiotics.

We're off to Vancouver for a few days so we will be changing the dressing while there and then we are back to see the vet again on Thursday to make a plan.

We seem to be on the right track now thankfully and this may all be behind us soon 🤞🏼

We're getting our time in with this week!

We had pre-anesthesia clinic on Monday, the dentist and labs on Tuesday, psychology on Wednesday and today we are in for shunt x-rays, neurosurgery and an iron infusion with hematology!!

That's on top of a PT intensive at
and our usual additional therapies! Thankfully we had a break from our usual school classes most of this week as they were on spring break.

We're looking forward to a quieter weekend! 😂

As usual has been the best, most patient boy as we drag him from place to place with hardly any down time in-between. He gets very upset when we leave him at home because he LOVES being out with us!

It's been a while since we posted. That's totally a reflection on how insanely busy it's been here!

Between Girl Scout cookie season keeping me crazy busy (my troop sold 3458 boxes), my parents came to visit for 2 weeks, the kids have kept our schedule crazy as usual and has been through some pretty awful medical issues which has involved a lot of vet appointments (more on that later when I get a chance)

In other news, Luca just started a PT intensive in He'll be here for PT almost every day for the next four weeks and we're really excited to see what progress he makes.

Our sitting room is officially cookie central!! The joys of being a troop leader!
