“The Colorado River is a waterway of superlatives—the most volatile supplies, the most iconic landscapes, the most dammed, the most litigated, and, lamentably, the most threatened,” Anne Castle, former Upper Colorado River State Commissioner. 

Within decades, overallocation, global heating, and megadrought have altered the Colorado River. The Colorado needs river-keepers, restoration, and conservation stewards building community for increased resilience amidst the scarcity and increased demands of the landscape.

The breathtaking waterway is surrounded by mountains and forests. Rivers flow from the Cascade and Olympic Mountains and Canada’s coastal ranges through watersheds that feed the Puget Sound. This rich inland sea holds economic opportunity and cultural significance.

We are honoring the Colorado River this Water Week!

Water Week brings together politicians, corporations, and advocates to encourage a water-secure future. 

Minute 323, an international agreement that establishes how the US and Mexico share Colorado River water, supports a remarkable conservation restoration effort in Mexico. This agreement focuses on sustainable use between the countries, stating Mexico can continue to store water in Lake Mead and the US will support water efficiency projects in Mexico, saving 200,000 acre-feet of water. Habitat restoration and scientific studies are funded by both countries for a decade under the agreement, which is coming to an end.

As Colorado River water allocation is on the table again, we must give rivers a voice by living in balance with wildlife and natural systems, and protecting and restoring critical habitats. Learn more Living River and the link in bio.

The science, dialogue, and global collaboration throughout water week evolves policy decisions across climate, development, and water governance.

The Columbia River encompasses immense ecological, cultural, and economic value, but its inhabitants have debated their water allocation rights for centuries.

As we come to terms with this unsustainable relationship with the watershed, and Indigenous communities renew their commitment to stewarding their territories, it’s up to us to balance the demands around water, salmon, agriculture, energy, and climate with a sustainable living river.
