The Scold's Bridle or Brank is a metal muzzle, mask, or framework designed to gag, torture, and publicly humiliate. Some had bridle-bits or curb-plates. Some bits were a flat metal plate which compressed the tongue, others had spikes which stuck in the tongue.

It originated in Britain in the late 1600s, then quickly spread to other countries and was widely used until the 1800s. It was usually assigned by a local male magistrate to women who were accused of gossiping and quarreling.

That the Republicans are trying to take away women's right to vote means women are having to address a new gag order of a different kind. It seems a woman with an opinion is a scary thing. Please vote wisely in the midterms.
