Naphthol red as a comfort color

I used naphthol red when I was first learning the art. I made pieces to give away. When I found teachers, I moved to the color my mentors used - red oxide - then to cadmium red, then to a red blend I was told about from another masters apprentice.

When I was asked to do this drum - which will be a working drum, used and living - I felt the pull to return to naphthol red. A drum to welcome canoes home, a red that’s a reminder to me of optimistic times full of dreams and sheer determination. Anyways. Naphthol red ❤️

I don’t share works in progress often.

One time in 2012 I was asked to do a logo, and I sent a rough sketch and asked them to imagine that it would look super cool when it was finished. They did not. So here’s me and my Diet Coke asking you to imagine that the formline will look super cool once the base coats go down 🙇🏻‍♀️

My artistic process is talking things through with in a really natural way, definitely not saying things like “pretend like we’re talking about art”

Time from a recent visit to the which I’ve always loved for the Bill Holm Center team 🥹❤️

Wolf Drum

The anchor is a clan owned crest with a fierce origin story. We don’t reproduce specific clan owned crests of other clans without permission / unless it is going to that clan. This drum is owned by a powerhouse woman with the rights to the crest 🤍⚓️

“These new ORCA transit cards are sure cool!!” - I say loudly to the light rail passengers next to me.
“I bet the artist who did them gives great high fives!” They leave me hanging. Scene.

Limited edition ORCA cards available at the Metro pass office in Pioneer Square ✨

Thank you for having me on this project
