What is it really like to race thousands of miles across the Southern Ocean with a crew made up mostly of amateur sailors? 🌊⛵
Join SSC member Jason Tyler (JT) for stories and photos from two legs of the Clipper Round the World Race. He’ll share what it was like facing heavy weather, living onboard and sailing thousands of miles with a crew made up mostly of amateur sailors.
Our Shoreside Socials are about more than the presentation. They’re a chance to meet other local sailors, find new people to sail with and get to know the SSC community. You don’t need to be a member to come!

There’s something about sailing at sunset that quiets everything else. For a little while, you’re not thinking about what happened earlier or what needs to happen next. You’re simply there.
This is what evenings at Seattle Sailing Club can feel like. 🌅⛵️
Send this to someone you’d love to share a sunset sail with.
What are you going to choose? A quiet sunrise sail or a golden-hour sunset sail? 🌅⛵️🌄
We asked a few people at SSC to pick their favorite. Watch to see which one won, then add your vote in the comments.
Which one sounds more like you?

When you sign up to learn to sail, you probably expect to learn things like steering, sail trim and tacking.
And you do.
But learning on Puget Sound comes with a few extra bonus lessons.
You start noticing current. Navigation markers begin to make sense. You pay more attention to traffic and you start looking at the wind and water differently.
None of that is something you’re expected to know on day one. It just starts to build as you spend more time on the water.
That’s one of the things we love about teaching out of Shilshole. You’re learning the boat, but you’re also slowly learning how to read the place you’re sailing in.
Salty sailors, where's the most challenging place you have ever sailed? Tell us below.
Send this to that friend who keeps saying they want to learn, you need a sailing buddy don't you?

Half your vocabulary was invented on a boat and you had no idea.
Which one suprised you the most?
We are telling you like it is...
1. Mornings at anchor, coffee in the cockpit while the fog lifts.
2. How fast it clicks. By day three you're steering without thinking.
3. The classroom disappears. One minute it's a tacking drill, then the next there's sunset behind the moutains.
4. The sleep!! no one mentions that you will be sleeping better than you have in months, the boat rocking at anchor does something to you.
5. The confidence. You step off the boat knowing you can take one out yourself.
If this sounds like you, hop into our Cruise N Learn on Nov 18th. Five days living aboard and you will earn your ASA 103 + 104 along the way. Right now we are running an extra $100 off this course, on top of the already discounted off-season pricing.
Could you live on a boat for 5 days? 👇

You can learn a lot about sailing by trying things.
A spinnaker might not be where you want to use that strategy.
There’s a point when you know enough to look at that giant sail and think, “I would really like someone experienced standing next to me the first time I do this.”
Fair.
Because flying a spinnaker isn’t just about getting it up. It’s understanding the setup, knowing what the sail is telling you and being able to react when things stop going according to plan.
That’s where learning it with an instructor starts making a lot more sense than figuring it out mid-gybe with a sail wrapped around something important.
If a spinnaker is one of those skills you’ve been meaning to learn, SSC offers dedicated spinnaker instruction so you can practice it with someone who actually knows what happens next.
One spot left in the ASA 111 on Sept 30th!
What sailing skill would you absolutely not want to teach yourself?

The TOP 5 things you do NOT need...
1. Your own boat
That’s a pretty big investment for something you’re still learning.
2. Years of experience
Everyone starts somewhere. Literally everyone.
3. A family that taught you how to sail
You do not need to grow up around boats to become a sailor.
4. Complete confidence
Confidence usually comes after you’ve spent time on the water, not before.
5. Any idea what you’re doing yet
That’s what lessons, instructors and time on the water are for.
We just want to let you know that you don't need to have everything figured out to get started. We know that it's not easy to get started on your own, that's why we are here.
If sailing has been sitting on your “someday” list, send us a message. We are excited to help you get out on the water!
