Spectrum Dance Theater
Spectrum Dance Theater (SDT) was founded in 1982 to bring dance to a diverse audience. Plans for national and international touring continue to grow.
Under Donald Byrd’s visionary artistic leadership since 2002, the organization has embarked on an exhilarating transformation that has attracted world-class dancers, produced some of the most avant-garde works in contemporary dance, and generated local and national praise. In addition to its Mainstage productions at The Moore Theatre, SDT launched in February 2006 its first STUDIO SERIES at the Madrona Dance Studios.

What a way to close a this season!
Audiences gathered for The Insidious Trilogy—the culmination of more than six years of work by Artistic Director Donald Byrd and a defining moment in Spectrum Dance Theater's 2025/26 season. Through Strange Fruit, Grief, and Targeted, we witnessed powerful performances and the kind of engagement that reminds us why this work matters!
At the same time, our community came together in another remarkable way during our Spring fundraising efforts. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, supporters, audience members, volunteers, and advocates, we not only reached but surpassed our goals! That kind of support fuels everything we do—from creating ambitious contemporary dance works and supporting artists, to providing educational programs and strengthening our connection to the communities we serve.
To everyone who attended a performance, made a gift, shared our work, volunteered their time, or cheered us on throughout the season: thank you. This season included three impactful SDT produced performances along with Company features in multiple national shows, the premiere presentation of The Insidious Trilogy, and countless moments of artistry and connection—and none of it would have been possible without you!
As we look ahead to the Summer break and begin planning for what comes next, we do so with gratitude, momentum, and excitement for the future.
Thank you for being part of the Spectrum Dance Theater community. Thank you for keeping us in motion!

Three works. Over seven years in the making. One final performance.
Tomorrow is your last opportunity to experience The Insidious Trilogy at On the Boards.
For over seven years, Artistic Director Donald Byrd has developed this ambitious body of work confronting the enduring legacy of racial violence, systemic oppression, and historical erasure in America. Bringing together Strange Fruit, Grief, and Targeted, the trilogy stands as the centerpiece of Spectrum Dance Theater’s season and a powerful exploration of storytelling through contemporary performance.
This work asks audiences to lean in and engage.
