A word on grief and loss

These weeks have been incredibly difficult for me, it started off with learning that my beloved dog Terrie, my 14yo partner, friend, son, baby… was very sick with a mixture of diagnoses that were severely and rapidly hindering his quality of life and considering that he had given me 14 wonderful years I made the very hard decision to compassionately help him cross the rainbow bridge so he could rest and not be in pain anymore. The anticipation to his appointment, and then watching him pass brought with a pain so deep, a sadness I had never experienced before (Terrie was my first dog) that I am still navigating through… offering myself grace, calmness, and allowing lots of space for the tears to flow. Terrie had been with me since he was 8weeks old and until his last breath he protected me and my family with all his tiny might. In preparation to his crossing we did his favorite things, ate lots of yummy foods, he had all the ice cream he could bear and we snuggled him so tight. Yesterday we said goodbye to his body but not to his soul, I asked him to visit me back in my dreams and to keep me company as I grief his physical form, I know he will find a way to communicate with me, I’m just so sad that his body isn’t here anymore… for now I’m taking this day by day.
And in this moment of grief community more than ever has once again showed up for me, I’m incredibly grateful to have a supportive network, people have messaged, called, dropped off food, wrote letters… my aching heart feels wholesome to see a community show up in such a tender and vulnerable moment I am for ever grateful. I also want to shout out to Dr. Chrissy from Heartkind home veterinary care https://www.heartkindvet.com who was an angel through the whole process, her calm demeanor, compassionate care and thoughtful actions made the experience a lot more comfortable for everyone. To my baby, thank you mi amor lindo for hanging out with me every single day for the past 14 years you were my all and I hope you know how much mami loves you mi amor, until we meet again…
