What happens when culture, play, and community come together in a historic civic space?

Intergenerational Mahjong 101 brought nearly 600 people to Union Station across two events, transforming the Great Hall into a place for learning, conversation, and connection.

Through a partnership between the City of Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development, Sound Transit, and Wing Luke Museum, the series explored what becomes possible when a historic civic space is shaped by the community it serves.

Mahjong was on the table, but the conversations and relationships that emerged around it were at the center. Experienced players taught beginners, friends reconnected, and new connections formed across generations and cultures. [Video Description] A host invites us into Seattle’s historical Union Station for a community-created Intergenerational Mahjong 101 event designed for learning, teaching, and playing mahjong together.

We were thrilled to have the Eng family visit and offer a sneak peek of what's to come for the Eng Family Home. Identified as one of the last remaining single-family homes in the neighborhood, the property was entrusted to the Museum to preserve its legacy. This 1937 home stands as a monument to resilience, constructed despite the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which disallowed citizenship and property ownership for Chinese immigrants.

​As an extension of our campus, this property allows us to preserve the historic and cultural integrity of the neighborhood while stewarding the home as an immersive, period-accurate educational exhibit. With the exhibit design and fabrication still in progress, your support helps ensure this history gets the representation it deserves.
