We’ve been on a learning journey to discover what’s new in the world of digital accessibility. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines – or WCAG for short ( www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/ ) – are a robust roadmap for ensuring digital communications products like websites, apps, videos, and PDFs are accessible to everyone including people with disabilities.

How do you implement WCAG’s guidelines when building websites? It’s a complicated question with about a million answers. Team Soapbox finds it helpful to lean on tools and resources created by problem solvers just like us.

One recent gem is the WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool
( wave.webaim.org/ ) which helps web content editors and developers assess possible blind spots in the websites they are building. What we love: this tool provides a live overview of its accessibility assessment for each individual page, with a color-coded approach to showing what needs attention. It also explains a bit of why an element might need to change. This tool is great for both troubleshooting during a project and continuing to learn about accessibility needs.

As with all technology, the constant is change. We foresee this journey continuing to take us to new places as we learn more ways to increase accessibility in our communication approaches.

Did you know these fun facts about Seattle Museums? Let’s start at our most famous one, @seattleartmuseum 🖼️ It opened in 1933 in Volunteer Park, but moved to the current location in 1991. The Hammering Man outside only hammers during working hours.  And right now you can see Monochrome by Alexander Calder and Tara Donovan. Next is @naamnw Northwest African America Museum in the Central District. Did you know this is the only dedicated African American museum in the region? It’s housed inside the former segregation-era Coleman School, which was built in 1909. Right now you can see the Luther Vandross exhibit and see 6 of his 8 Grammy’s including his 2003 Song of the Year “Dance With My Father.” In Seattle Chinatown-International District is @winglukemuseum 🖼️ It’s the countries only pan-Asian art and history museum.. They are popular for their connection and exhibit for Bruce Lee, but don’t miss “DISplace” which celebrates regional Native Hawaiian creatives, and “Ten Thousand Things” which explores hidden stories of personal connection between everyday objects and their owners.  How did I learn these things?
