Making portraits of Black people is a simple gesture and demonstrates that I refuse to function as an artist in a deeply racist nation without speaking up - even if I get cancelled.

The aesthetic visual presence of Black people, to me, is an obvious choice when it comes to human subjects of extraordinary relevance and beauty and to remain silent by avoiding painting Black portraits because some people are uncomfortable with that choice would be an act of racist complicity. No thanks .

My portrait work is currently represented by LIC Gallery that replaced a former gallery enthusiastically because they believe in my work and in representing a wide variety of diverse viewpoints.

I admire people who are willing to stand up for humanity in the face of those trying to diminish it.

Looking back helps to find my way forward. History is in the present. The past is what becomes our present and can suggest the future.

If the job of the artist is to reflect the times and realities of the era, which I think it is, I want to rise to the challenge.
