Bill Stevens spent 21 years at Washington State University Athletics.
I've known him for about half of that — since 2009, when I was a young broadcaster calling my first game in Pullman and he made me feel like I belonged there.
Last week I flew back to Pullman for a day with the Cougs. Watched practice. Met with coaches. Did the work.
And then had dinner with Bill.
We talked about tennis. About long morning walks. About how he met his wife at the campus library. About fatherhood. About what it means to spend two decades giving everything you have to a place and a program you love.
He's retiring now. Moving into the next chapter.
And I wrote about it this week - because Bill made so many people feel seen - and that is powerful.
Hopefully today's Y-Option newsletter is a reminder that the game gets us there, but the story keeps us there.
The People Who Stay With You Bill Stevens is retiring. This one's for him — and everyone who's made you feel seen along the way.
Brett Bielema has been a head coach for 18 years & is one of the veteran voices of the game.
So Todd Blackledge and I sat down with head coach and we got into the debate behind expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams.
Coach Bielema makes the case for an expanded playoff and why coaches have to fight for what’s bigger than the logo on their chest.
We also talked about what it means when 48% of your roster is new, and how Illinois is trying to build upon recent success heading into 2026.

The approach that Luke and Ryan Montgomery have taken around NIL is as mature as I've seen in all of college football.
It's evident the impact their parents, their financial advisors and both Ohio State Football and Georgia Football head coaches have had on these brothers.
Watch the latest Y-Option podcast to see their insight on how they are Financial-Athletes.

What It’s REALLY Like To Get PAID In College | Montgomery Brothers Interview In this episode of Y-Option, Yogi Roth sits down with Luke and Ryan Montgomery (Ohio State and Georgia) alongside Dane Burkholder (founder of Financial Athle...
We sat down with two brothers living the new reality of college football. One is at Ohio State. One is at Georgia… and they’re getting paid.
But the money part isn’t the full story — and Luke and Ryan Montgomery share that story with tremendous depth.
What stuck with me from our conversation was what happens when you’re 17 and the world starts treating you like a business. Who do you trust? How do you not get played? How do you build the right circle before the wrong people build it for you?
If you’re an athlete, a parent, a coach, or you’re just trying to understand what NIL actually changed behind the scenes… this one’s for you.

I interviewed the most loyal player in college football.
Noah Fifita is one of only five senior QBs in the nation still playing for the team that recruited him. -
We talked about the expectation for 2026, the pressures of being a Heisman candidate, and what made him stay loyal to the program.

So many lessons Learned from the Road in College Football that can apply to life - think they may land on you, your company and possibly your family. A joy to write and grateful for this community.
The latest from Y-Option.
I Spent a Month With Elite Coaches. Then I Went to a Youth Basketball Game. I left college football inspired. I left a youth gym unsettled.
I asked Jedd Fisch what year 3 leading is like and after spending time around the program this spring this is what I learned:
UW is a special place & Jedd has a clear vision on how UW will take the next step in the most competitive conference in the nation.
He has established a standard with this team that shows up every day, a staff that evaluates, recruits and develops with urgency, and in 2026 they know they have the identity to create a special season.
Because in the new era of college football, the teams that win aren’t just talented, they’re aligned. And for this year’s Dawgs, they are both.

A lot of thoughtful content from Dan Lanning in our recent podcast conversation, but what stood out to me most was the idea of telescope vs microscope goals as a leader/HC/growth-minded human.
This you'll dig the most recent Y-Option podcast with University of Oregon football HC Dan Lanning

Everybody Thinks This Is Oregon’s Year. What Does Their Coach Have To Say About It? Dan Lanning sits down with Yogi Roth for a conversation about Oregon’s blueprint for the 2026 season… what’s real, what needs to improve, and what the Ducks ...
I asked Dan Lanning a question I’ve never asked him before and I learned this:
🦆 has created a culture and standard in Eugene that is living out the DNA Traits that he laid out upon arrival 5 years ago — Connection, Growth, Toughness and Sacrifice.
Even amid the changes in college football those DNA traits are only getting stronger as the Ducks continue to recruit, develop, and operate like one of the top programs in the nation. After visiting this team in spring practice, the expectation that the Ducks take the next step is as real as it gets.
In this episode of , I sat down with to discuss the edge, clarity, standard, and the urgent style in which the whole program breathes. Coach Lanning shared the tells and signs that actually matter for Oregon, the stuff you feel before you ever see it on a stat sheet.
What landed most on me was Dan Lanning’s ability to set goals, actualize those dreams and have the awareness to have a microscope and telescope when leading this proud program.

The 2026 Notre Dame Football team is going to be, once again, a force.
I haven't been to Notre Dame in almost 2 decades and after watching practice, meeting with coaches and players, it was clear to Todd Blackledge & I -- The Irish are a title contender.
