Seattle’s mayor Mayor Katie B. Wilson just released her first proposed budget — and there’s a lot to unpack.
The big headline: no major new taxes.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some big changes.
Wilson says she inherited a $175 million budget gap and is proposing nearly $50 million in annual cuts, while putting more money toward homelessness and funding a plan for 1,250 police officers.
There are also city job cuts and potential delays to some transportation maintenance projects.
This is just the proposal. Now Seattle City Council gets to dig into the details and decides what to keep.
I’ll keep breaking it down here so you don’t have to read hundreds of pages.
A family camping trip ended with five fathers in immigration detention.
The families say they went to the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest for Labor Day weekend — and never expected federal immigration agents to show up in the middle of the night.
Now, they’re speaking out about what happened, what the Forest Service’s role was, and why they say other families should know about it.
I sat down with three of the women whose husbands, fathers and loved ones are still detained.
Watch the full story. ⬆️
The Forest Service says it routinely works with federal agencies that enforce immigration law.
That included ICE during a September 5 operation at the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, where five Mexican men were arrested.
DHS has provided the men’s immigration histories.
But one key question remains unanswered: What specifically prompted agents to target these five men at the campground?
I’m continuing to report on what happened and the role the Forest Service played.
AI COULD KILL US ALL… BUT THAT MAY NOT BE THE REAL THREAT.
A former Anthropic researcher recently warned AI could kill us by the end of the decade.
But a University of Washington professor says the bigger danger may be what happens when we slowly hand over our critical thinking, decision-making and learning to AI.
His advice?
Use AI to assist you — not replace you. Verify what it tells you. And keep thinking for yourself.
NEARLY TWO YEARS LATER — WE’RE FINALLY HEARING BOTH SIDES.
A teenager was 15 when five members of his Fall City family were killed inside their home.
Now 17, his future is being debated in court.
Prosecutors argue the killings were deliberate and controlled — and say the case belongs in adult court.
The defense is telling a very different story.
Attorneys are pointing to the teen’s upbringing, alleged abuse, isolation and mental health struggles as factors they say the judge should consider.
So what happens next?
Judge Veronica Galvan is hearing arguments over several days before deciding whether the case stays in juvenile court or moves to adult court.
I’ll be breaking down what each side is arguing — and what this decision could mean.

Business and community leaders are asking Seattle’s mayor and City Council to take action on public safety.
A letter sent Sept. 10 cites an August poll of 500 registered Seattle voters and lays out several requests — including increased police patrols, a 100-day public safety action plan, meeting the city’s 7-minute priority 911 response standard, activating certain CCTV cameras and changes around open-air drug markets and encampments.
The letter was signed by leaders from organizations and companies including the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Challenge Seattle, Washington Roundtable, Microsoft, Starbucks, Costco, T-Mobile, Nordstrom, Zillow, Alaska Airlines and others.
The coalition is asking Seattle to activate existing CCTV cameras in Pioneer Square, the Stadium District and other high-event areas.
The letter says the cameras could help deter crime, identify suspects and hold offenders accountable.
What do you think Seattle should prioritize when it comes to public safety?
The White House has an “ALIENS” website.
And no — it’s not about extraterrestrials.
The site uses the word “aliens” to refer to people in the U.S. who aren’t citizens, while using UFO-style graphics and language like “THEY WALK AMONG US” and “ALIEN ARREST MAP.”
It also points the finger at previous presidents, members of Congress and other government officials, saying they knew what was happening.
This is an official White House website — and you can see the language for yourself.

Sometimes you just need to romanticize your life a little.
The Deflock America Halloween movement is encouraging people to draw attention to Flock cameras and automated license plate readers, or ALPRs.
Flock says its technology helps law enforcement investigate crime by identifying vehicles and providing investigative leads.
Privacy advocates, including people involved in the Deflock movement, have raised concerns about how vehicle data is collected, stored and accessed.
The Halloween campaign is part of a broader debate happening across the country: How should license plate reader technology be used, and what privacy protections should come with it?
Want more information about the Halloween movement? Comment “DEFLOCK” and I’ll point you to the full story.
If you’re a DACA recipient and you’re planning an international trip, there’s a new immigration ruling you need to know about.
DACA recipients can still potentially travel with advance parole — but a new ruling could mean leaving the U.S. triggers a 3- or 10-year bar for some people.
So what changed? And who could be affected?
I break it down here.
