We enjoy the only pitch dedicated to rugby in Western Washington, Pat Ryan Memorial Field.
The Valley Kangaroos Rugby Football Club (VKRFC), a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1978, is one of the top rugby clubs in the Pacific Northwest. VKRFC supplies full maintenance for the field, allowing public park accessibility for the surrounding communities. Valley Rugby and Liberty Rugby, with the support of members of the Seawolves Fanbase, Seattle Rugby Club, and Seattle Slam Wheelchair Rugby, attended the City of Renton Council Meeting last night in support of improving our home practice, Ron Regis Park.
Kevin Flynn, Jon Brooks, and Shannon Nielson spoke at the meeting, where they highlighted the benefits of rugby to our community, who the users of the field are, and the improvements needed to continue growing and improving Renton.
Ron Regis has three fields, but only one has lights, and that field is a sand pit. We are hoping to transition the sand field to a grass field, add lighting to the adjacent grass field, install rugby goalposts, add a picnic shelter, more seating, and a scrum sled track.
By telling the story of rugby and the benefit to our community, we are working with the Renton Parks Department to highlight and fast track this facility for improvements.
It was great to see the 28 young ruggers in attendance, and even greater to see them engage in civic discourse!
And it turns out that Councilmember Rivera is a rugger! You can see her on the right hand side of the photo in the blue blazer.
We'll keep everyone posted on our progress and efforts to increase access to rugby and lower entry barriers to participate.
