Is your 2026 summer intern actually an employee? 📑🏛️
Many Washington business owners are surprised to learn that calling someone an "intern" or a "contractor" doesn't change their legal status. In 2026, if you are directing an intern's work, providing their equipment, and benefiting from their output, the law considers them an employee.
This means they are entitled to:
✨ $17.13/hour minimum wage (statewide).
✨ Rest and meal breaks.
✨ Paid Family & Medical Leave protections (if they work 180+ days).
Misclassification can lead to back-pay orders and heavy penalties. We help Seattle-area employers draft clear, compliant offer letters that protect your business and your team.
💬 Message us today for a case evaluation to audit your summer hiring plan.
Without a will, the court decides how your property is distributed, who is in charge of handling your estate, how creditors get paid, and most importantly, who will raise your minor children if you leave them behind before they turn 18.
For children over 18 or family members with disabilities, the court also decides how they receive the money you leave, and it may not come with the protections you would have wanted.
A will is a great start to protecting your family because it gives them a clear outline of your wishes and a process to follow during a time of grief.

Protecting the "Dad-Built" Legacy: Why your 2026 plan needs an update. 🏠❤️
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in the Seattle and Mercer Island area! While you’re celebrating today, take a moment to consider the legacy you’re building. With Washington’s estate tax exemption now at $3,076,000, many local families find that between home equity and retirement accounts, they are closer to the "tax cliff" than they realize.
In 2026, protecting your assets from a 35% state tax rate requires more than just a simple Will. From Family-Owned Business Deductions to Living Trusts, there are proven ways to ensure your hard work stays with your family.
💬 Message us today for a case evaluation. Let’s make sure what you’ve built lasts for generations.
An employment contract should clearly establish that the person is an employee, define their responsibilities, and include language that protects your business when they decide to leave.
Former employees attempting to take customers, recruit away fellow employees, or walk out with intellectual property and business tools is not uncommon, and a strong employment contract is your first line of defense against it.
For new and growing businesses, having a trusted attorney who understands your business is essential for decisions like signing new vendor contracts, changing your services, or protecting your brand through trademarks.

Honoring Juneteenth: A Legacy of Freedom and a Commitment to Justice.❤️
Did you know that although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that freedom was actually enforced?
This "delayed freedom" is a vital lesson for all of us in the legal profession: The law must be active, accessible, and enforced for it to be meaningful. This Juneteenth, our firm is reflecting on our commitment to providing equitable legal support to all families and business owners in the Seattle area.
A common situation is a business that has invested significant time, money, and effort developing a brand, only to find out it is already taken by another business, and then receive a cease and desist letter from that same brand in another state.
Trademark rights are not limited by geography, so a business in a completely different part of the country can still come after you for using a similar name. If you have questions about trademarks and want to protect your brand, give us a call.
