It was bound to happen. Let’s use the "probably" before the suggestion that I go back to where I came from as an opening to explore. Steven says that I, Sunil Dasgupta, leave the country, and implicitly he, Steven Borkoski, remain.
First, if I should be removed or be told to self-deport, what rights would I have? Steven believes that my policy preferences (and he is entirely wrong about them, but let’s hold that for a minute) cancel my naturalization rights, the 31 years I have lived and paid taxes in America, the hundreds of students I have taught, my endless community work, including stepping up to produce a local news show at a time when local news was in decline, the home we built, the community I am part of, but most of all he wants to cancel me as a parent.
Should I just give up parenthood? Steven may want me to take them with me; they do look brown. But one of them is an adult, another is about to be, and the third thinks she is. If I tried to remove them, I am quite sure they would refuse. In fact, their mother, whose grandparents were immigrants from what is now the war front between
Ukraine and Russia, would absolutely make sure I did not.
Since my children have the same right to be here as Steven himself, I have the same right to be here as Steven’s father, who could possibly be a first-generation immigrant. It is possible he was not, but we need only go some generations before we can identify the arriviste ancestor. If my natural right as a parent is extinguishable by Steven’s argument, there is no good reason to say why the principle would not extend to two, three or twenty-three generations. If we settle the principle for Steven but not for my children, we have to ask why?
Surely someone can ask Steven to self-deport.
If we consider the issue more logically along a timeline (not going backwards as I just did), we should consider the legality of Steven’s ancestors’ arrival against mine. I don’t know their
circumstances, but I have never been in illegal status. It took me 14 years to become a citizen.
I am not giving that up. I am not giving up my natural rights as a parent. I am here to defend my freedom and the future of
my children and their freedoms just like every other American. I am here as well to defend our collective freedom and the collective vision of an America
strong and confident against the fears and divisions brought by all the Stevens. (Apologies to the good Stevens of America!)
And let us not forget this, Steven is also wrong about my views on immigration.
